Im wanting to make (or find) a Teathered power supply for my hb 3d pro and bcp for practicing hovering. im thinking a car battery with a long lightweight lead to the heli and somewhere in the middle a capacitor to clean up the voltage. if a lipo is 12.6 charged then a car battery should work right? what capacitor should i use and where should i put it? would i need any other components to keep from BBQ my ESC?

This would be great for learning! no more 5min flights then charge for 1hr! prob will add a micro cpu fan to keep everything on the heli cool during extended flights.

Any links for existing plans? i know hobby lobby has one for the eco 8 but not sure it will work for 11V lipo setups (plus its like $30)

i have done this using a motorcycle battery and some 14 gauage speaker wire. if you are using a battery (as you said you would) there is no need for a capacitor. i have never tried to run my heli of a power supply mostly becuase when i try it with my R\C cars it just leads to jitters and other radio problems.

one thing to watch out for it over heating the motor or speed control as in 5-10 minutes they maybe fine but if you have a full 13 volts for half an hour or more they might burn up.

my setup is just a cheap ebay 400 outrunner motor witha 35 amp esc on a walkera 36 and i don't have heat problems but just make sure you check that it isn't over-heating once and awhile.

You might consider putting some lead fishing weights along the wire so that it tends to hang vertically and rest on the ground unless positively lifted by the heli. This should reduce the risk of getting the landing gear (or anything else) tangled in the wire.
