Hi All. Years ago I built, amongst other things, a nine foot powered thermal'er of my own design. Worked really well and went up using an old OS.10 set on full throttle with a small fuel tank (4 or 5 minutes of climb as I recall and 10-15 min descents). Although I'm now getting into helis, I still yern for the sight of a big majestic thermal machine cruising overhead. So I plan over winter to build a fairly large one, a 12 footer ideally with a 1 foot chord and a low wing loading, basic lightweight design, Rud Elev only (maybe spoilers), nothing too fancy. However, to get her up I'd like to make use of electric technology. Does anyone have any idea of the sort of brushless motor size I'd need to get this giant bird up (say one of the Medusa range. I'm thinking graceful ascent here, not ballistic missile. Prob, a 1500mah batt, as I don't want much extra wieght.
Trouble is I've no practical guide as to the power required.......
Cheers Rick.

Bump!
C'mon guys - y'mean with all that electric motor and batt combo experience out there, no one has any idea what sort of elec power I'd need for my planned big thermal ship. One thing I will add is that I've now bought a Medusa 28-32-1200 and also, since I've got a Neu motor for my Rexy build, the Align 430L is redundant, but at 3550Kv its useless for direct drive, must have a gearbox I think.

Reaserch indicated that my old OS10 was equivalent to about 150-200 watts - so for a 12 footer we gotta be talking 300-400 watts and a gearbox, yes?
Any ideas welcome..........
