View Full Version : Advantage of brushless on the tail?

Howdy, fellow freaks... :)

Small question on the brushless conversion on the Blade CP pro that someone might have an answer to...

The idea of replacing the stock tail-motor with a brushless is quite interesting in terms of durability and performance...

But...
...and there's always a "but"... ;)

What about the mode of control?
I suspect those ESC's are not into any kind of governing or active RPM control?
So, the drifting tail-trim caused by the decreasing battery voltage would still be there, right?
Anyone knows a source for RPM-controlling ESC's for that size of BL-motors?
I searched but couldn't find anything, maybe someone's luckier than me?

I *know*, the Tail-Trim-drift can be cancelled by either trimming myself or with the additional HH-gyro...
But hey, if you can swat two flies in one swish, why not go for it? ;)
I rather have a "smart" or tidy basic layout, than a bunch of electronics and mixers and stuff that help me correct the faults or flaws of the basic layout... ;)

Thanks a lot already now for any hints, inputs or ideas... :)

Cheers,

Daniel

First off, brushless is free spinning, less friction. I built my own motor for the tail (Haven't installed it yet, but it's built). The main thing is it has bearings. You shouldn't pull as many amps with BL. I guess the other advantage is if I don't like the way it acts, I just rewind it.

I'm ding this on a stock blade, not pro. Does the 3-in-1 for the pro handle the BL motor or do you have to use a separate one like on the BCP? If it's separate, good luck finding one that will work under 18 amps. I finally found an 8 amp, but it was like pulling teeth. The main thing is that the esc doesn't have any restrictions. Especially soft start or brake. I had a heck of a time finding a low cost, small amp esc that would work. I have heard the CC 10 will work, but it was too rich for me.

What'd you end up with for the TR ESC??

I have a jeti 8a for mine. It has no brake, no safe start and no soft start. This is very important on the tail because it has to respond immediately. It's the only one I found that meets the criteria. My original tail motor is still going strong, so I still haven't put the BL on. I am prepared though. I picked up a virtuoso 18a on e-bay for the main. It is totally programable so you can shut off all the slow stuff. Although you can use soft start for the main, you don't want to have to push the stick full throttle to get it to arm. Not a problem on a plane, but very dangerous for a heli.
