I just found the reason I have some slop in the tail shaft(it moves back and forth a bit through the bearings). I had the pulley end cap on backwards! When I repaired it from the last crash I just put things back they way they were not realizing that the previous owner installed it backwards.
The reason I thought it was ok was that one side of the end cap sticks out a bit and the tail pulley has a little space near the end of it which looks like something could slide under it. When putting the end cap on the wrong way that little piece actually goes under the pully(between tail shaft and pulley) just a little bit which made me think it was supposed to just push on as far as it would go. This leaves about 1mm of space where the belt can go without being on the notches of the pulley. It also causes you to to have some slop because part of the spacer went under the tail pulley.
Tail pulley end cap installation:
Correct way:
/ end cap that slides on the tail shaft
/
=| ------==|=---------------------
\
\ pulley
Wrong way...
|= ------==|=---------------------
I assume the mx400 uses the same parts and could have the same issue if the tail shaft pulley end cap is installed backwards but I don't have an mx400 to test that.
