Why do I need a BEC for a lepton, does not my speed controler have one?

Do you think it *might* be useful to indicate which one you do own?

my speed controlller is a castle 80 amp, and, no offense taken.
thanks

Then the reason you need to use an external BEC is because that speed controller uses a linear (if I recall correctly) BEC. Which means the higher the input voltage the more heat the BEC has to disapate and the less current it can supply to power the radio/servos.
To avoid that problem, you need to use a switching type BEC that can operate at higher input voltages and provide higher current outputs. Most switch type BECs can operate at 35+ input volts and provide 5~6 volts at 3 amps constant and 5 amps peak. SOme low power versions only provide 2 amps which is not enough for helicoptors with digital servos.
I personally use Koolflight or Medusa BECs. The only speed control I know of with a built in switching type BEC is the Kontronik Jazz.

Arthur,
The "Spin" ESC from Jetimodel do also have a switched BEC.

Really, I haven't seen those before. Do you have a link to them? I'd like to take a look at their specs and availability.
The Jazz ESC also uses a good switching BEC regular

this right here is a very good reason to use an external bec. Even if your esc has one onboard.

It will let you bring a heli down safely if that ever happens to you.
OUCH!!
Jon,what caused that to happen to your Jazz?

Looks like some MOSFET trouble (to put it lightly..)
