View Full Version : Will a Fury Canopy fit the Spectra-G

Hi,
I have an opportunity to buy a pre-painted Fury Canopy for a good price.
What's the difference between the Fury and Tempest/Spectra canopies?
How much effort is required to fit a Fury Canopy to the Spectra?

the main differences are that the fury canopy has a hump on the left side, which at one time allowed the fuel tube to clear the canopy and the actual mount positions are in different places. With the Stratus the frame has all the holes to allow you to use either one.
however with the spectra, the entire canopy is more forward so that if you run engine forward, you don't have to cut it up as bad. I've not tried to use a fury canopy on one, however at minimum you'll have to drill new rear mount holes in the frame.

Actually the Fury canopy will go on the model with no problems. I did it early on and have run the Fury canopy as much as the Tempest one.
You have to move the rear canopy mounts to the tail boom grip locations and the same stand offs as the Fury set-up and then cut the canopy.
Now the drawback. You must use the rearward facing motor layout to do this as described. The problem lies in the front stand-off locations when turning the motor forward facing. You could then drill new mounting holes in the forward frame to accomplish the forward facing layout.
Hope this helps!

Thanks John,
My Motor's rearwards facing so no issues there.
Is the Fury tank any wider around the nose? Could you get a bigger tank in there?

With the layout of the front tray, you will be hard pressed to get a larger tank in the nose. The model comes with an 8 ounce tank and there are a few who have moved the canopy forward and have put a larger tank in place. I have heard of some even getting a 16 ounce tank in there. The Fury tank will not go in the nose on the tray.

hmmm... I have a 16oz tank mounted up front. I'll check at the field this weekend and see if I can get a Fury canopy on there.

From the way I understood it, you will want a tempest canopy as the holes in the fury canopy to mount it to the heli do not match up to the canopy mount studs on the Spectra-g. Personally I wouldn't want to drill new holes in the canopy or move the studs on the Spectra just to make a "foreign" canopy fit. Look around and see if you can find a Tempest canopy for sale cheap and that would be the "easy out" option.
I have a 16oz tank up front (dubro) and that fits with the stock canopy -- barely. But, I *do* need it as flying hard 3D I get 15 minutes and the tank is pretty low, like 1/4 to 1/8 tank remaining so I need every ounce of that to get my 15 minute 3D flight in with a little reserve so I don't run out (tank level can't be seen in flight).

The Tempest, Spectra and Stratus all use the same canopy, 122-90.
The Fury uses a different one, 115-90 I believe.

Someone did not read my reply once again.........The Fury canopy fits the Spectra-G with NO PROBLEM...NO DRILLING and uses THE SAME MOUNTING HOLES IN THE CANOPY when used on the Spectra-G as long as the Fury type mounting is used (stand-offs moved to the Fury position) when the motor is rearward facing.
If you are using 16 ounces of fuel in 15 minutes you are slinging it out of the vent line.. Henry Caldwell could not 3-D hard enough with mine to have used more than 8 ounces in 16 minutes!

I'll add that my original post refered to me having the opportunity to get a pre-painted fury canopy with a graphic paint scheme that i like and i just wanted to know if the fury canopy can be made to fit.
I'm not looking to replace a broken canopy. If i was i would buy a spectra/tempest canopy.
Thanks for the info John, your answer gave me what i needed to know.
I have the stock 8oz nalgene bottle in position 2, just in front of the motor. Initially i wasn't getting much flight time but as i got the motor better tuned my fuel consumption halved. I get at least 10-12 minutes of general flying with this tank and it's still improving.
I also have some 16oz nalgene bottles in both square and rectangular. The square bottle fits under the tray but rubs the bottom of the canopy at the front lower corners of the bottle. I have contemplated cutting to little windows in the canopy for the corners to poke through. They'll have the added benefit of allowing me to view the fuel level.

I remember when I first started flying my spectra G with a G26 and not broken in. The fuel tank would be empty before 10 min. I thought that was a joke but Now that I use a stock g231 and it is all broken in I can get 10 min. easily and maybe closer to 15 min. but I always stop around 10-12 min. flights. I am fine with using the 8oz tank now. I think rbort is running a G26 and that probably uses more fuel?

Fuel consumption...I am running a G26 in mine and if I was to fly it until its dry I will get 20 minutes with it on the 16oz tank. I fly 3D and I'm always flipping and rolling and such so if I tamed it down and just did slow circuits around I would probably get longer flight times. After the 15 minutes I still have somewhere between an 1/8th and a 1/4 tank remaining, so call it burn 13oz is 15 minutes. The standard 8oz tank would not be enough for a 15 minute flight -- you need some reserve so you don't suck air and burp. I consider the last 1/4 of the tank "unusable" fuel for 3D, its OK in a hover or level slow flight for that reason.
I believe the cause of the extra fuel consumption is a) the higher gear ratio (7.15), b) the 3D flight which works the motor harder, and c) the G26 compared to the G231.
That all being said I do have a double loop on my vent line which is designed to not allow fuel to spill out though maybe some of it still is? I used to see some evidence of that before without a loop, but I think that double looping it solved that.

With the price of Gas going up someone might be siphoning the fuel out of your "G" while you are not looking!!!!

Betterstill you turn around after you land and your two gallon gas tank is missing. In the parking lot there is a car speeding off, and you see a little smoke coming from the tailpipe... :D
