View Full Version : head speed with 11 tooth pinion, too fast engine RPM?

I am setting up a friends EB, 800mm mainblades which has an 11 tooth clutchbell pinion. I didn't even know they made 11 tooth pinions. That comes out to a 8.18 to 1 ratio with a 90 tooth main and would require and engine speed of 11,864 RPM to give me the recommended 1450 head speed.
That's a bit too fast for the engine isn't it???? (engine is G26)

The extra tooth I am running (12 tooth) drops the engine rpm about 1000 RPM which seems more reasonable, but thats just a guess.
Experts????

Is the engine stock or has it been modified by Hanson?

11,864 is a bit high for a stock engine, but as long as it is running smooth and strong, it's not out of bounds.

The modofied engine can and does run at higher RPM's, 12,000 is not unheard of.

It is Hanson modified. Since this is for a new flyer, with some past helicopter experience, could it be setup with a bit less head RPM as long as we keep the engine RPM a little above 10,000 RPM? I suspect most of the flying will be hovering for awhile.

Certainly, as long as you keep the engine RPM up to keep the clutch engaged properly.

You may also need softer dampening in the head if you run lower than 1450 headspeed.
