View Full Version : "Toilet-Bowling" Behavior

What adjustment/s does one need to address when a Blade CX exhibits what I've heard called"toilet-bowling", a circular, spiraling which sometimes gets out of hand and uncontrolable causing a crash.
Is this blade misalignment or balance? I sometimes also see a rocking or swinging behavior (as though the helicopter was swinging back & forth from a string).

it's caused by low headspeed.
if you are using the stock supplied radio, simply shorten the 4 links above the swashplate the same number of turns to reduce total pitch and it shoud increase headspeed.

Howdy, CXman... ;)
I've had this on my Lama too...
Some smooth circular motion.
I was able to reduce it drastically by checking the blade tracking of the upper rotor and playing with its linkage to the stabilizer-bar, actually shorten that.
Just take the lever of and adjust one half turn, reattach and see whether it's gotten better or worse, if better, do one more, if worse, go one turn back and recheck.
Cheers,
Daniel

Wayne,
I have a CX and have also been having the “rocking” effect, which is different from the toilet bowl effect. I don’t understand the “shorten 4 links” fix: what 4 links are being referred to?
Thanks for your help.

The toilet-bowling effect is caused by the fly bar being to tight. If youare using the stock inner shaft with the plastic head remove the screw that is above the fly bar. With the screw removed the fly bar pivots much easier and if you hit something or crash the fly bar can pop out of the yoke and not break the yoke usually. If you are using the aluminum head inner shaft make sure there is no plastic mold flash on the fly bar pivot points, and no burrs in the aluminum head where the fly bar pivots.

I saw CP, now I see CX.. doh!
CP this would be a headspeed issue, CX I have no idea.

I second the flybar to tight

I’ve had the toilet bowl effect (TBS) on 2 different occasions during my brief (2 month) “career” (addiction) as an RC Heli Pilot. I looked through a number of different forums and here’s what was reported for TBS cures: 1) flybar binding, 2) swashplate separating slightly (if it completely separates, then the heli will hardly fly at all), 3) blades not tracking correctly (sometimes replacing the blades, even though they appear balanced, fixes the problem), 4) top hub working itself loose a bit (for the case of the 2-piece top hub). Most posters agree that TBS is usually related to flybar problems.
This rocking or swinging effect, however, has got me stumped. I’ve got my CX set mostly back to the stock settings; the one remaining thing is that I’ve still got my server links set out 1 hole. I’ll change that back to the original setting tonight. Over the course of a number of crashes I’ve replaced most of the CX parts. The only major part not replaced is the 4-in-1. So, it would appear my problem is one of: 1) something’s not adjusted/mounted correctly (e.g. lower hub, flybar, blades), 2) server link placement, 3) 4-in-1.

For what it's worth, on the CX wobble, check the bottom head or spindle, there are two points that stick out through the two vertical links that are connected from the swashplate to the lower blades. If one or both of these are missing or not protruding through the center of the vert. links, you will have a dickens of a time controlling your bird. Also, I have had the top part of the swashplate seperate from the bottom part and it's nearly impossible to fly. If that happens, you can snap to two pieces back together, but it's recomened to replace it. Hope this helps.
