Hi Chris,
with electric start it`s not much different than an electric heli. I presume you can not do the tracking when the motor is running either? Besides, how often do you have to track the Bergen? it would be a safer option to shut down to adjust the tracking anyway, remote starting is not a problem and much safer IMO.

CJ, I personally agree with you 100%. BUT, I doubt the AMA will see it this way. I'm going for the conversion knowing the situation and the fact that I can't fly it at an AMA field but I have plenty of places to fly it comfortably and safely. I have a few pilot buddies with private fields and ultralite strips. Most are R/C freaks and are just as excited about the XLV as I am.

My impression is the AMA ruling is out of date, based on what was needed before the arrival of the two stage turbine with completely remote kero start. They must have thought is was normal to stand within the rotor disc area when starting up, what with having to hold the head and disconnect the propane connection etc. Of course that was a safety issue then, but times change, pilots should be allowed to think for themselves. Funny how the AMA say the rotors must be stationary whilst the turbine is idling, although this does not apply to electric helis :? , but then it`s ok to have fuel tanks that you can`t see how much fuel is left :? :) work that one out.

Agreed CJ. Would probably need a bigger voice than us to change the rule. Besides, you guys (UK) don't have to deal with this sort of stuff, do you? :arggg:

I think our AMA equilevent, the BMFA has a silly rule about not allowing the use of metal main blades at any of their events. Good thing though the BMFA don't run many helicopter events .
Mind you we have lots of other problems over here, speed cameras, speed ramps in the road, not allowed to drive if using a mobile phone, not allowed guns or even a pen knife, etc. etc. and it's raining.
Our Country has turned down the slipery sloap towards a nanny state. I think you guys must have it better over there

p.s. I thought about mentioning the war...
