Ok here is my setup.

Hawk Pro
Futaba 9Z
GY401 gyro
S9254 rudder servo

I have watched Bob's 9Z setup video and his GY401 video.

My problem is this. Even with the rudder control rod disconnected my rudder servo will not return to center. If I move the rudder to gimbal lock one way there is a delay then the servo moves but it does not move back untill I move the rudder to gimbal lock in the other direction but with the same delay. What gives? Its a brand new gyro and servo. I had an HS-5925 on it before the S9254 and it did the same thing. Its not control rod bind because I have removed the control horn. And it doesn't matter where the throttle is either. Is this normal?

This is how a 401 works and is normal operation. In the air it works fine as the tail is actually moving when you give an input and release.

Ok, good. But a few more questions.

1. Is this going to effect setting the limit pot?
2. In your 9Z vid you show the gyro adjustment of gain 2, but what (if anything) does gain 1 do? And how do I assign a switch to the gyro? Or do I?
3. Is the 12Z any easier to program?
4. In your opinion how does the 9C super compare to the 9Z?

Even with the rudder control rod disconnected my rudder servo will not return to center.
That's because it's in HH mode. In normal mode it shouldn't do that.
Is this going to effect setting the limit pot?

The limit pot should be set in normal mode and the end points for the rudder should be set to 100%. You can turn them down later to make the heli spin the same speed in both directions. The limit needs to be set to keep the rudder from binding in either direction.
In your 9Z vid you show the gyro adjustment of gain 2, but what (if anything) does gain 1 do? And how do I assign a switch to the gyro? Or do I?

The gain is what you use to set the effectiveness of the gyro. Too high a setting will make the tail wag and too low a setting will keep the tail from holding. Channel 5 is used for the gyro switch and the end points are used to set the gain.
After you set up the gyro you should set the machanical linkage too. In HH mode the heli will want hover straight. In normal mode it may not. You need to hover it in normal mode to see if an adjustment is needed. If it don't hover straight in normal mode you have set it so it does using the rudder trim. Then set the linkage so it does hover straight with the trim in the center. When you change from HH to normal node there should be no change in rudder. Don't forget to turn off the heli to allow the gyro to reset between adjustments.
You also must remember to turn the heli on in HH mode and the light on the gyro should not be blinking.
I have my rate setting at 55% in HH and 65% in normal. That might be good place to start. But it depends on your setup and flying style.

Ok. So I went into function in the model menu and set GYR to -SA. Then I went into GYR in the Condition menu and set gain 1 to 80. Now when I move SA into the on position the light on the gyro goes off. Is this correct? And is 80 on gain 1 and 32 on gain 2 good settings for learning?

I don't know what you mean when you say (SA) but in HH the light will be on and in non HH the light will be off.

Switch A=SA

To answer your 9c question you can set one up in about 30 seconds and as long as the servo arm is the right length I can usually get them pretty darn close w/o ever taking off.
