OK guys, I am trying to train on this thing and I am a bit curious. I bought a T-Rex (never having tried a helicopter... other than a blade cx for a time or 2 at my buddies house) and any way I want to get real friendly with the G3 sim before I ever think of turning up the rex. So with that out of the way here is the deal... I am using my DX6 with G3 and it responds and works fine shows up as a G2 stick. I can pick whatever heli I want and so on but here is the deal I would think if I hit the left stick (push up) the heli would lift straight up and hover in one spot, well my deal is this I give it throttle it does go up but it seems like the heli dust drifts all over the place not able to get it to sit in one spot and hover without fighting the sticks. With out making this a long question, should I be able to move the left stick up and have the helicopter lift off the ground and I let go of the stick and have it just sit there or is it really that big of a chore to keep it in one spot?
Thnx Guys

Think of it this way your heli is balanced on top of a really slick beach ball that is contantly moving.

You'll need to input some cyclic movements as the skids leave the ground. Once it's actually in a stable hover, you shouldn't need much to keep it there.
If you don't move the collective once you are in a hover, you will still gain and lose altitude as you apply forward and back elevator.
To answer your question, yes, it will require more than just moving the left stick up and hovering to get it to stay in one place. Small movements are key here, small cyclic inputs and you should be able to hover in no time.

Thanks guys, I didn’t know it would be so hard to figure this out... I makes me appreciate the videos I see of you guys out there in real life even more... they make it look so easy.

I'll keep practicing

keep at it - it takes some work but one day it will click and then you can move to the next step. Just dont get discuraged and dont try to run before you walk (so to speak). I tried to do FFF before I could hover and eventually spent enought to buy a small island with a house on it before I finally admited that basics come 1st - cool stuff comes last and everything in beween is just trying not to crash :D

I read a post yesterday that made perfect sense. The larger the heli, the easier it is to stabilize. Think of it as trying to balance a broom on your finger. Once you get it balanced it's pretty easy to control. Now try it with a pencil, you'll be shifting all over the place trying to keep it steady. The best thing is to find the hardest heli to control and learn to hover it. Once you can get to the point you can control that one, you'll be able to fly anything.

that makes sence. what heli do you think I should try in g3?

Isn't there a MX400 in G3? Find the smallest, electric helicopter in there.

For a beginner it can be a chore keeping a heli in a stable hover. It's going to feel like the bird has a mind of it's own until you get the hang of the stick inputs, and how much you need to use to maintain control without lots of drifting. Sometimes you're going to find yourself resting your fingers or hands on the sticks just enough that the heli will be getting an input and you think the sticks are perfectly neutral, but they are not!
Similar to what the others said, imagine the task of trying to keep a ball bearing centered on a plate of glass, and that's what it takes to hover! They do hover hands off for a few seconds, but a proper machine set-up is critical. You can make a great heli fly terrible if things aren't correct.
Don't worry about the time involved to get the hang of it though. One day you won't even be thinking about the correct stick inputs. You'll just know.
G3 has tp be the best investment I ever made! I'm still really new to flying helis myself, but man, what a journey to get where I am. G3 is awesome!
Forget about trying to hover the hardest flying heli in the sim, at least until you grasp the concept of flying and the stick inputs need in all the different flight orienations first. You're probably going to have your hands full just learning tail, then nose, then side in hovering.
Pick a nice flying heli to begin with. The Dominion 60 and 90 both fly great. So do the Dolphin .46 models. I never liked the feel of the Impalla trainer. Some of the larger scale helis fly nice too (non-scale head).
The Expasion pack 1 and 2 rock! Buy them. You'll love the MA Ion-X, the Bergen Intrepid, the MA Fury Extreme, MA Stratus, and Avant Aurora. The later of these are light and extremely responsive, but super smooth!
If you are up for more of a challenge with a more gentle hovering heli, just hit idle up 2 and turn on the dual rates. Once you are used to that, then try the little buggers. The MX400, suggested is available in Expansion pack 2, or maybe someone has a download for it somewhere on the net.
