Thanks for the info! I guess I'm going to Radio Shack this weekend...
I found this great thread with Lucien from Scorpion explaining how to make one:
http://rc.runryder.com/helicopter/t547501p1
Now I have to figure what resistor value I need for my CC 80 HV ICE...
Last night I stayed up until 1:30am working on this thing...got a lot done. I replaced the 5mm shaft on my Scorpion motor with a 6mm shaft and changed out the bearings to ceramic. I have a Rhino (I believe) 14t pinion but it's not 6mm all the way through so I'm a bit worried that the pinion rides up too high on the shaft and I'm unsure if the main gear will hit too low on the pinion. Anyone else have this issue?
I'm trying to get this thing done before my wife/daughter go on vacation in a week and a half... When they're gone I plan on flying r/c a lot as I'll have more hobby time! :)

How do you use two 6S together? What do I have to buy to get them "Together"?

Think of it like two "AA" batteries. You're connecting the negative of one battery to the positive of the other. You're then left with a negative and a positive lead. You need a serial adapter to connect two packs together for a 12s pack.

Okay, now that I thought about this the answer is simple: cut the shaft to size. I'm going to wait until I of course fit the motor, but I'm pretty sure the pinion rides too high...
I bought a resistor for my spark arrestor but the lhs was out of 5.5mm bullet connectors so I'm hitting up a Hobby People near my work tomorrow...
Slowly but surely this thing is taking shape...

Here are some pics of my 12s setup, uses everything per Reccleston's specs.
Getting 5 minutes on the 12T putting 1800mah back into the 3000mah packs.
Very happy.
The Sk720 is awesome.
Packs come back barely warm. Could go one minute longer for sure, might try 13T, but really I don't need any more head speed, I'm at 2050 already.

If you run "Dean's" connectors you can use this:

or use the example and make one yourself like I did.

Thanks caralmar (http://helifreak.com/member.php?u=88222) and Climbing-n- flying. I think I maybe want to get 12 S, and use two 5000 mah 6S packs, so I get something around 10 min of flight time. I will use it as AP platform. :)
I don' t quite understand what the thread starter does with the tail? Does he use two bearing blocks? Is this so important?

Hmmm... that might be a bit too heavy for a 600. You could probably get 7:30 to 8min of easy flying with the 3000mAh packs running lower headspeed on a 12T pinion. I get 6min of hard flying on a 13T pinion at 100% flat throttle, but I put back 2400mAh into a 3000mAh pack, so I'm right at the limit. My headspeed with a 13T pinion at 100% throttle is insane...2300RPM!

To heavy? Hmm. I will use it as a AP bird, so I don't need that much lift. Ofcourse I need enough lift to fly "normal" and climb "normal".

I guess you'll need to be creative in where you place the packs to get a proper CoG. Wouldn't a 700E be better suited for AP? Its already setup for 12s using 2 5000mAh packs.

I took a test now. And I lifted a payload of 2 KG with the T-rex. I had 75% throttle when it lifted. :)

Started my conversion, I couldn't have done it without this thread. I have a question, I purchased 2 5mm align pinions and of course I can not adjust them to the correct position on the motor shaft as they are not drilled through. To obtain optimal contact between the pinion and the maingear I need to either:
1 - Cut the 5mm shaft to size.
2 - Find a 5mm metric bit (Trust me this is not easy) and use a drill press to make an accurate hole.
What do you think is the best route?

I just had the same problem with my 6mm Scorpion shaft. I cut it to size with a dremel...piece of cake. I had purchased the Rhino pinions that comes in packs of 2. I had tried to drill it through but those things are hardened and it was really tough so I gave up...

you can cut thats what most do and one big thing make sure you put a bag over the motor when you are cuting it to keep the stuff form falling in to the motor

Why don't you just spend the $7 for a pinion that fits with no mods?

I would recommend tacho'ing your headspeed with your e-logger because the set rpm feature results in an over geared and an in-efficient setup with short flight times.
13T governed should be good for 2100rpm, however, 1950-2000rpm would be better suited for sport flight.
Ok, I got my elogger rpm sensor and I have my setup for normal flight mode as 65 85 85 85 85.
My max head speed at the start of the flight was 2075 and by the end of the flight it was down to as low as 1862. The flight time was 7:34:30 with a 13T PIN and 3000mah 40C lipos.
Lipos and ESC, not even warm after flight and 4025-630 motor was 105F with sensor but since it is a brushless motor I got the reading from the top of the motor. It was warm to the touch and a little hot if I kept my finger on it. I also did a test flight with the temp sensor between the lipos and got a max of 75F
My question is how do you set up gov mode with the CC85 HV? I looked at the videos and it takes you step by step of getting the head speed but what should I have my end points on my TX(DX7) ? Should I use 0 25 50 75 100 or 0 for all of them. My end points are fine at the moment and I don’t want to strip my gear but would love to have a head speed that stays the same.
I would like to keep a head speed of around 2000 to 2075. Just sport flying with some flips.
Also this Thread made my 12S conversion as easy as making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Thanks a lot.:noteworthy:noteworthy:noteworthy

Question for you guys....
Is it normal for it to be "hard" to turn the rotor head against the magnetic resistance of the motor? When I installed the motor, I put a piece of paper and between the pinion(14t) and main gear, pushed the motor towards the main gear hard and tightened the bolts. I seem to remember the gear mesh should be fairly close, but it takes a lot of pressure to spin the rotor head so I'm just checking...This is my first BIG electric heli so I'm unsure...
Tonight I setup the linkages to get everything level at mid stick and I'm set it up to to run +/- 12 degrees.
All that is left to do is setup the my BLS251/GY520, install all the wires and ensure that they aren't in the way and plug in the motor.
With any luck I'll be able to maiden this heli FINALLY this weekend...
I have 3 sets of 6s3000 40C Turnigy's that I synch charged on my Hyperion DUO3. They all seem good except one cell is slow to come up to charge in one pack. It's registering ~4.13 while all the other cells are at 4.20. It has slowly come up from well below (~4.04) so I'm hoping it can get up there... I'll probably cycle this pack on the charger just to hopefully condition it. The other packs all seem spot on...
Regards,
Pete
what motor is it ?
I have a scorpion 4025 630, and its not easy at all to turn it by hand (compared to align's motor)

Yes, that is my exact same motor. Thank you for responding. I've never had such a powerful motor so I guess I'm not used to the powerful magnets.

I've stripped my front TT gears 3 times since going FBL on my 600. Flew it 3 months with FB and no stripping unless I botched an auto or something. I noticed that the gears would grind down when going from 9 oclock to 12 oclock tic tocs. Doing this maneuver is turning the nose right and directly into the torque of the main blades. My buddy went to a hobbyshop in Dallas and they told him i'm running too high of voltage. I told him they didn't know what they're talking about. The increased torque from 12S is predominently sent through the mains, not the tail and it was the particular maneuver I was doing that caused the stripping and not the fact that I'm at high voltage. Anybody else stripping front torque tube gears? The other strip was doing a nose right cobra piro (knife edge piro into toque of mains). So now I'm doing most hard moves counterclockwise so that torque will help rotate the heli not go against the rotation.
Here's some pics of the ground down gears and you can see the video down at the bottom.

Sounds like your local hobby shop are a little old school.

From your photo, it looks like the umbrella gear on the end of the torque gear has moved forward a little, which could make the meshing very tight.

Still running my original 2x 6s Turnigy 3000Mah 30/40c (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=9489&aff=97114) packs, approximately 60-70 flights per pair, with no loss of performance.
Hi Mr Rceccleston, for yr 12s setup, did u change the motor to scorpion or can the 600m withstand such power? I am askign cos I would prob be doing so with my 4 new packs of nanotech from turnigy.

Unfortunately, 12S is not supported by the Align Motor, it has too high of a KV and it is not rated for 12S.
