Chris

Didn't I see you mention somewhere that you were going to be testing 720's? Did you and what were the results, if so?

Inquiring minds and all :)

I remember Chris mentioning that as well. My 401 has the dreaded drift problem that so many people have experience. I would like to replace it with a 720, but would like to read the results of some real-world testing on a Bergen Gasser.

I recently installed a 720 in an Observer. I used the installation method detailed in the manual, and default configuration + vibration filter. For the mechanical setup of the tail, I followed Chris's 401 tail setup detailed on another forum. I then used the CSM software to verify the settings, and discovered that I needed to use a longer servo arm to get the right amount of throw - equivalent to the second hole on the medium Futaba six-arm "star". I've put about a gallon through it with the 720 and it is at least as good as the 401. However I am still in the engine tuning phase (this is my first gasser) so I have not "wrung it out" - someone else would be best to report on that. Gain is at 90, stops are crisp, no hunting or drift. The 9254 is warm, but it was warmer using the 401. I will be replacing the 9254 with a Hitec 6965 next week at Colin Mills suggestion, twice the torque at slightly slower speed. Also the support from Colin is near-instantaneous, a nice complement to Bergen support.

Thanks for the input. I'll be very interested to hear you impression once you've got the Observer dialed in. If it's holding now with a machine that still needs tuning, I can only imagine that it'll get even better.

I've had a 720 on my Spectra-G Gasser since new and it has worked flawlessly.

I use the supplied mounting hardware and have the vibration filter disabled.

The best compliement i can give the gyro is that it just works. I honestly have not had to think about the gyro since the initial setup. It has coped well throughout engine break-in and my initial gasser tuning learing curve. It was one less thing to worry about during all that.

The thing we noticed with the 720 is the consistency of the piro's.
On a windy day with the 401 the piro's go faster
when the tail is travelling with the wind
and slower on the side travelling into the wind,
so your piro rate goes fast/slow/fast/slow etc - very annoying
The 720 does not do this - it gives a very consistent piro rate
