A friend of mine made this for me--It is KILLER. :D This one is three layes of carbon and super stiff. It weighs in at about 8 1/2 ozs. He is going to make me a 2 layer and maybe a one layer ultra lite version. :D Two layers should be less than 6 ozs. :D
I am afraid that the will probably cost too much to try and sell these-- but the mold is done and I will get a price from him in case anyone is interested.
Yes, I am aware that some feel that the carbon may interfere w/ radio reception. (plus I run a base loaded ant. in the frt of the canopy) I will do some testing and let you know. :?

Hi Shannon,
I want one but it needs to be ultra light version for Ion-X. Looks cool! I would still paint it but leave the windshield carbon and maybe some carbon accents.

be careful where you put the antenna. that canopy will block the signal out.

SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am a carbon freak! Please let me know asap on a price.
Man, that would look awesome with just a few accent stickers on it, leave the rest alone.

I agree with Russ. It would be awesome for an ION.
How much lighter is it over a stock fiberglass lid?
I think the raw carbon accents would look cool.

The ION canopy is already very light. I don't know that the Carbon would be much lighter- maybe stiffer. The problem is that when you only start w/ 5 once- it is hard to loose an ounce, and when you do- you are only saving an once. I did switchto a BEC instead of a 4 oz. battery.

Yes but it would be cool :D

That antenna will have to come out of the canopy. It would be like trying to use your cell phone in a metal shack. Probably depends on just how conductive the carbon is. Do a ground range with nose pointed at you with and without the canopy.

I did the ground check and did loose about 100 ft of range (had about 400ft w/ stock canopy). This was w/ a 9Z and the first step of the ant. raised.
Not being a cautious man I decided to fly it. I went into a hover-no problem, went out about 100 ft. then 200 then 400 then 500, all the while rocking the elv. and piro-ing.
Not being a patient man I went into foward flight and did a few stahl turns--no problem.
I brought the heli back in to about 200 ft and did a few piros--no problem. I then hovered nose in and all was good. Gave it a little back elv. to do a little tail first flight and as soon as the nose shifted up it locked out. PCM went into fail safe and the heli fell to the earth  :( -- for about 3 ft when it recovered. I hovered to a landing w/ no problems.
Not being a smart man :? , I decided to take it into a low hover about 30 ft out and see what happened. All was fine-- no lockout. :D
At this point I landed and asked Jeff Masterman to come over and take a few digital pics to post. As I spooled up and started hovering it locked out- fell--unlocked-bounced-hovered-locked out- fell- bounced- locked out- leaned over- and just touched the tail to the ground when I went into hold and setteled the heli to the earth. N damage, except a few teeth on the bevel gear.
I think their is an issue w/ range, however, I feel like the lockouts were more of a glitch than a range prob. The machine I was flying was a Tempest FAI w/ carbon frames. I think the carbon canopy rubbing on the carbon frames is the real problem. I am sure that a full length ant. out of the bottom will fix the range issues, but I need to make sure that there is no carbon/carbon friction points to cause RF. (I don't have the little rubber channels on the frame- where the canopy rubs)
It sure looks COOL

Shannon,
You may be correct about the carbon canopy rubbing on the top of the carbon frames and causing RF. My suggestion is get the antenna outside the canopy. I know one manufacter use to make a carbon fiber tube to attach to the landing gear to put the antenna wire thru. It would work fine if there was several inches of wire hanging out the end of the tube. But if there was an inch or less the heli would go into failsafe or hold.
You can probably place the whip antenna under the bottom of the heli on the outside and be fine. If you want to stay with the whip antenna.

How important is it to maintain the 4" OF WIRE FROM THE RECIVER TO THE ANT. Can it be longer or will it really change the tuning of the ant??
Damn Caps Lock :(

Somewhat important. An antenna is like a tuned ciruit. Assuming Whip+4 inches + whatever is in the rx make up half-wave antenna. An inch will throw the resonant freq. off by 1MHz. It'll still work, just not as well. Range check is the safest way to find out.

>How important is it to maintain the 4" OF WIRE
It depends on the design of the replacement antenna. If you are using one of those antennas (http://www.wsdeans.com/products/antenna/one_piece.jpg) that has a loading circuit in-between the wire and the antenna, then you can get away with somewhere from 2 inches to 10 inches of lead-wire. Only a range check will tell for sure.
The antennas without a loading circuit are more sensitive to lead length... with the lead length, in fact, being part of the antenna's length.
I'm running the one pictured above and have been quite happy with it.

Shannon,
If your referring to the antenna wire when using the Revolution whip antenna. I have used longer than 4 inches from the receiver with no problems. When I was flying P2K's, I had the wire from the receiver about 7 inches and then soldered to the wire on the Revolution antenna. I needed to mount the antenna in a spot on the P2K that I needed longer wire, so that was how I handled it.

I am running a Revolution- I will give it a try this week. I also am going to but the little rubber channels on the frame.
This exp. does make me believe that the Carbon fan shourds I was going to make next will be total junk, since they rub the engine. Damn they would have looked Cool. :glasses2: :(

Carbon fan shrouds should not be a problem. I can't remember where I have seen them, but I do remember seeing a couple of carbon fan shrouds the last several years.

Bergen sells a carbon fan shroud for their line. I believe it also fits the Fury, but not for sure.

did you get that canopy too work yet
i had an idea what if the first couple layers were glass and then maybe the last layer or two would be the carbon fiber then the carbon wouldnt be in contact with the frame ever

The Dean's antenna can be cut between 4" and 10" according to the directions, however the blue coating tends to crack and look terrible after a short period of time.

I haven't taken the time to play w/ it anymore. I am pretty sure that keeping it off of the frame will do the trick.
