Do they all use the same motor but with different gearing?

Different motors and gearing. If they all had the same motor you could increase either the torque or the speed, but not both. Futaba has servos that are all over the map for both torque and speed.

For example the 9253 and 9254 use the same gear set but the torque and speed ratings are different.
