Thanks Chris.
I want to stay with an outrunner so I will be anxious awaiting your test results with the Mega and the AXI. :D

Guys,
I have a video of my Ion flying with the Actro 24-4 and the Flight Power FPEX 5000 packs. I need some where to put it so it can be viewed. Any ideas? Thanks for any suggestions.

Jason,
It's to large to send via email. It's just over 26 megs. I uploaded to Augusto's server so hopefully that will work. I'll post a link if it works properly. The flying's not all that exciting cuz I suck...but it's cool to see how well the Actro motor and the Flight Power batteries work. Especially at 4500' in 90+ degrees!

Good enough.
If it doesn't we can work something out. :D

Thank you for sharing your video!!!!

very interesting thread! The "have to auto it down every 5 minutes to let it cool" part scares me... Eric, where are you at in your flying? Doing backwards? any hard stuff? Reason I ask, is if you are doing mild 3D and you're having to bring it down to cool, is it even worth it when doing hard 3D???
I love the idea of more power, but I don't want to deal with heat issues or having to shorten a flight :?

Eric is way passed the mild 3D, he is into the hard 3D Banging things around
Don't let him kid you he can fly very well, Backwards, forward, upside down its all there

Mike,
I have been coming down at the five min. mark as precaution only. This motor is self cooling and is maintaining these temps without the use of a fan. I am a bit leary of temps because of the issues I've had with the Hacker. At the 7 min. mark one of them just let go a caused a controller fire. Apparently it was a problem with the motor covered under warranty however. Remember, also, that I am running 5S2P packs and my all up weight is under 9lbs. The perfomance is incredible for very aggresive 3D. Total flight time avaible safely on these packs is 8 min. as they are only 5000 mah. This is fine for me as the performance out weighs the flight time. For just tooling around I'll stick the TP 8000's in. Mike, I've seen you fly plenty of times in Snohomish and I think this setup would be ideal for you if you can stand the shorter flight times. The light disk loading is just awesome. I think Russ is going to try an actro 32-3 in his shortly so maybe you can get some feedback from him. I'll have this heli at IRCHA and youre more than welcome to try it out if you would like. Hope this sheds some light on the 5 min. temp thing for you. I think you could safely do the entire 8 min. without cooling down if you threw some backward inverted in there at about the 4 min. mark. I'll give it a shot this weekend and let you all know how it goes with temps and such.

With any luck, I should have some video from Eric posted by tonight. Then you can see how his Ion does first hand. :)

Eric, dont know if you saw the thread but a fellow added a PC fan blade to the shaft of his actro and it dropped the temp like 50 degrees celsius. The thread is over on rcgroups and he is running a 40 series actro in a electric pro2k. Just a thought, if you can cool down the motor then the speed control should cool down a bit also.
Apparently the forced cooling works very well on the actros. I am trying to come up with a way to do the same thing on my Jokers.
BTW, did you ever get a chance to weigh your Actro/fpex ion?? Curious to see what it comes in at

So far temps really haven't been a problem at all with this setup. One thing to note is that I TRY to fly like Mike but I'm in no way as proficient as he is. So my poor collective managment skills will tend to heat the system quite a bit more than someone like Mike who has much better collective managment skills. The temps with this combo are the same as what I was getting on my Hacker setup.

Eric,
Thanks for the quick replies! I am excited about the idea of a new motor... Have you noticed any trouble with it being so light that it doesnt penetrate the wind well? Shorter flight time is no biggie at all, performance is what I'm looking for. I don't fly my Ion past 10 minutes now... If you could get 8 and it was kickin ass....sounds good to me
Have you used it much with the 8000's?? does it still beat the hacker with similar sized batts?? I know you're saving weight for sure losing the middle gear and bearing stack...
Give us the goods!!!!:-) Thanks to whoever posted the pics of this combo...looks neat :D

Mike,
The wind does affect it a little bit more but so much that it's any harder to fly in the wind. We have wind non stop in Utah so maybe I just don't notice any more! :arggg: I have flown the 8000's quite a bit and I think it's a bit better than the hacker combo. Where you really notice the difference is maneuvers like a tic toc. The head will load up with the actro but just keep pulling hard almost like a 90 where the hacker seems to go pretty soft if you load it too much. The hacker setup with the smaller batts is a ton of fun as well but I like the actro better. I am pulling the hacker out of my other Ion now and installing an Actro in it as well. Not only do you get rid of the Secondary gear stack (about 6 oz) you also loose the fan as well (about 2oz I believe). I'll try and post some pics tonight of my most current setup as it is much cleaner looking than the first pics that were posted. Plus the motor is polished now!

Hey , well I have the 41-30-12 and the 10 , but they are being tested in the rappy 50 with 10s , I do hope its a mild motor because I dont want it to strip a gear , well my 32-3 came back , 1 week to fix , not bad for Alaska

For what it's worth, the Mega turned out to be a red herring, was hot enough to fry eggs on in less than a minute, good power, but not usefull.
I am working with another motor now, an LRK. Really potent. I will have it at IRCHA for those that would like to see it.

Chris,
I am ready to do this.
So if I was to buy the 124-140 conversion, what would I need and how would I get the mount to use an outrunner in it?
Also any luck testing the AXI motor?

You would also need a main gear, pinion gear, pinion bearing block and motor mounting components for whatever motor you choose. Call me here when you are ready to do this and we will coordinate everything you need. I have not as yet had a chance to look into the AXI motors...maybe in a week or two.
