i got a used Trex 500 from a older friend i fly with. it has a scorpion motor in it:1400kV rating. its not in gov mode just soft start on my scorpion esc..what im noticing is even with soft start enabled(which includes no brake) the motor seems like it is in brake mode..come from 90% throttle and let off and you can not only here it stop but can see the main gear come to a stop. is my used scropion bad?? or since it is taking try and try again to get the esc to initialize is my pack bad maybe? one way bearing is free, it freee spins just fine. thanks

sounds more like a esc issue then a motor.
I think i would check and make sure the scorpy bearings are fine

ok well dumb question but how do you check these bearings other than by feel? esc is brand new so im hoping thats not the case...

Why is it a problem if your main gear stops quickly?

xf100t, it just seems as though the brake is on..i just dont have any experience yet with the scorpion stuff so im just trying to learn whats normal with these and whats not. helicopter mode is not supposed to have the brake on so i want to know since it is a used bird with a used motor(esc is not used) if something is going bad and what not thats all. it doesnt seem to me like the main gear should stop so fast if brake is not on..which leasds me to think something is either wrong with my new scorpion esc or something is wrong with this motor.

not saying the esc is bad but i would think programming needs some love in the settings dpt.
the motor pulls apart in 5 minutes and if its used and you dont know what you have you should pull it apart and feel the bearings and make sure there in perfect condition.
if the bearings are good its more then likely a esc setting

because if the brake is on it will rice the teeth right off of the gear.
just to clear things up, the motor is 'dumb'. it either works, or it doesnt. it does not have settings to adjust. it doesnt have a brake.
the ESC is the brains. if the motor is physically fine: windings are good, bearings are good, shaft is good, then you likely have an ESC programming issue. did you disable the brake? if you didnt even look at the ESC settings then you likely have other issues to work out. there are usually 5-6 settings that must be correct to get the motor working well with any given heli.

ill have to pull the motor apart and check her out. ive reset and set up the scorpion esc at least 6 times now trying to get it right thinking i did it wrong. the manual i believe is terrible it just leaves loose ends. maybe everything is cool and im just not use to scorpion stuff i dont know. the wierdest thing is how most of the time it takes 6 or more tries to get the esc to arm..then after it does arm the light from the esc continues to blink like somethings wrong..it seems like its cutting voltage as well cuz it wont reach any kind of headspeed...as in i know with this motor and the 90A esc she can scream and the headspeed is low and if i punch the throttle it just bogs. i have the head mechanically setup, have throttle curves setup from finless videos to start with and the gyro is setup...something is just wrong with my esc settings I HOPE!!just dont know how to figure it out without writing these books of threads i seem to be writing!

by your post the motor is fine and its all esc settings. you may have a bad esc but i believe it to be settings 1 of the 2

Why will it "rice the teeth of the main gear" if it stops quickly?

imagine putting a stick in your bicycle spokes at full speed.

The magnets on are pretty strong so it won't spin for long after you cut power, even when it's not driving anything. Also, are you sure your gear mesh isn't too tight?
You might try taking the pinion off...... power up the motor...... then cut the power to see if it's braking or not.

The motor STOPPING quickly will not put excessive load on the main gear. The motor only has to stop the inertia of the main gear plus the drag of the one-way. If the motor STARTS too quickly it can strip gears as the motor must then accelerate the entire main and tail rotor systems.
Brake should have little to no effect unless your one-way locks up or has exceptionally high drag.
"Rice the main gear"...nice. I hadn't heard the phrase before.

Except the motor would only be trying to stop the gear itself, the blades and everything else would keep on spinning because of the one way bearing....don't mean to split hairs here but...

you're just not imagining hard enough.
my imaginary bike has a nekid brunette riding. whether the spokes break, or the stick gets wound up around the brake cable or the bead on the tire breaks and catapults the whole mess 30 yards are the least of my concerns.
what were we talking about again?
