can't get 401 to initialize using hitec receiver and JR 9303

I'm trying to setup my 401 gyro on my Trex. I have an eight channel hitec receiver and JR 9303 radio. I turn the system on, the gyro flashes quickly then goes to a constant flash. My HS56 servo moves when I move the radio stick. I have a 401 on a nitro heli and a JR receiver using my 9303 and it works fine. I think I have all the settings the same. Does anyone have any suggestions?

constant flash indicates the gyro is seeing a different electronic center than the previously set center.
Either move the stick rapidy right/left 3-4 times in a second or three, or switch rapidly from normal to HH the same way and it will reset the center.

I found out that I had to have the gear switch enabled in the radio. I'm confused because I don't have to have it enabled on my nitro powered ship using the same radio and same gyro? Can someone explain?
