Any more progress on this Andrey ?
I have recently been approached to configure a heli to carry a ~20 lb payload for an industrial application. Electric would be preferred. 15-20 mins duration.
I can build most of it , its the Rotor head bits I'm afraid of . Lots of load there, the kind thats easy to calculate, and the kind that only testing can prove out....

I have a friend that used to fly an X-Cell with a 25 lb payload (GPS gear and such). Obviously not electric, but the mechanics were well suited.

I've been so busy with updating my lineup, I have not had chance. plus, I just ordered another CNC machine, so I am tight on the budget.
if you have large budget, I would go with the beefed up version of MFS head out of australia. about 5k for the basic airframe though. it is the beefiest head I've found in this level.

Well, this route is being considered because Rmax's are very hard to get now. That was the previous choice, starting at $80k.
Thanks for the prelimary research Andrey,
I think I will contact those blokes in Oz there.

For esc, conside the Powerjazz and run 15S. you will need to find good motor. I was considering actro 40-4 with additional fan. (as it does not have heli version) would not trust most other motors for this size, and cooling will be an issue with most airplane motor.
let us know how it goes. sounds like great fun. :) for right now, I am going to stay with maxi joker and smaller. at least until next year. may be we will see more large mechanics next year.

I plan to use 2 - 32-4's on 12s (or so). I think a pair of shulze pop-tarts will do it.
Its all prelimary at this point , could be just a dream. Would need -at least- a Carvec as well LOL. It seems like its an opportunity thats too good to be true.... :smokin: we'll see.
One things for sure, I've met so many people while doing AP stuff that my network of freinds is getting bigger all the time. I love it :glasses2:

Hey guys, were right in the middle of a Vario XRV electric conversion, using the 3-blade 2.5m flapping head. As soon as we get the second stage gearing figured out, we'll post more info.

Steve Neu has a couple of really big motors that are good for tons of power. One is called a BAM (for "Big A$$ Motor... :) ). It is about 3 inches in diameter and has a 10 mm shaft. I think it is good for 5000W continuous. He has another one that is even bigger. I think he was doing them for a 40% airplane.

we discussed this a bunch of rcgroups for a while, but finding the right airframe is always tricky. I've seen the copterworks setup a few times up close, and it's nice, but looky bulky, although it seems to fly well, for a mac truck. Realistically, an electric ship of that size I think would be a bit pointless. I'd just go gas, or turbine, as likely those would be so much cheaper, and with proper building could easily have nearly no vibes. You could do a BAM for this, but I'd say 32-4's, or 40- somethings would be better, as you'd really hate to loose this puppy. If I were to do this, I'd prefer a mid step, say 900mm blades at 1300 rpm. Just a little more overhead then a maxi joker2. Just remmember guys, as we size it up, we're getting closer to full scale ;)

DJ,
Have you got anything that will edit that 4K footage out of the Red camera?..... The 20K $ camera might be doable, but I think it would take a good sized chunk of Fort Knox to edit the stuff.......

Discreet Smoke will do it but I have no way to capture it. It would need to be converted to sequential frames and then brought in.
And although Smoke will do it, my Smoke is on a "wintel" machine running Linux, not the more powerful SGI version so I suspect it would be very slow going.

If you're thinking about buying a Red Camera for $20K, you'd better sell the farm because it will cost you far more than a paultry 20K...more like $50 to $70k by the time you ad your primes, matte box, slides, firestore (100 gigs at 4K ?? How long with that last?) , record deck...etc.
Lots of dough unless you're in a major production where someone else is picking up the equipment rental costs.

Anyone tried these? 2.1m rotor dia. for a turbine setup. Might be worth a call.

AVID or FCP should be able to handle the post work.
As far as a large RC helo platform, has anyone else ever heard of TAG, Tactical Aerospace Group? The specialize in custom autonomous helos AP and other uses.

I have talked to them somewhat in depth about an agricultural application helicopter. They sound like a good company.
One problem is that each helicopter sounded like it is customer specific. They don't have a "standard aerial photography helicopter" for example.

I've got this same set up but I'm going with the SPH5 two stage turbine. Be careful with the XLV as the MTOW is listed at 44 pounds. This head requires a lot of power and I'm sure your going to get close to that as an electric just in batt weight. I'm also interested in the WeController for my XLV. That'll put the machine close to $45,000, ugh.
Good luck with the conversions.

you can nearly buy a Rotorway for that price!!!

Hmmm, DJ has a point. I guess I'll stick with the Carvec if it can do way point nav.
