Does the JR 770 qualify as a more modern gyro?
Yes.

... I will say that I am a bit dissappointed in the 401's ability to detect and ignore wrong inputs from my thumb, ...
Hi,
Could you explain what you mean by this, please?
Thanks,

Dynam GY48V $24 shipped from xheli.com is much better than GP750, Spartan or whatever Gyro you name it haahahhaha
Sometimes, if you have a beater heli, it's great to know a different side of the world - give it a try since it is beater and it is supposed to be beaten up!

Sometimes overlooked in this picture is the servo. I've got a 401 on my 450, and it had all the issues that sonny talks about, and I generally agree. But I recently put a better servo on it (changed from a 9650 to a HS5084mg), and saw a big improvement. Its still not as totally locked in feeling as the g7703d on my 600, but its really pretty good.
So... while I'm not really defending the 401, I do say to anyone upgrading... be sure you get a servo as good as your new gyro. You really want a response time under 0.1 second... theres legit science that explains why it makes the gyro work better (its kinda heavy going control systems crap though) And if you're limited on the budget, a fast servo upgrade can make a significant difference with a 401, if your existing servo is on the slow side. Besides... you'll want the fast servo when you get the better gyro anyway.
EDIT: And if you're buying a gyro for a new heli.. there's no freakin rational reason to get a 401 anymore. The new ones are definitely better, and aren't more expensive.

That answers my question. The 401 is just as good as it always has been, but it isn't as good as the new stuff - that makes perfect sense. "Sucks" just seemed a little crazy
