To bad it wasn't filming when the tail went out.

Sorry to hear it! From the pics it doesn't look too awful. Was the head OK? Good shot before biting the dust!
I had a very similar experience with the tail looking almost identical. I didn't know to JB weld the brass inserts in place on new tail blades. About 20 minutes into first flight with new tail blades one came off and everything else went to the ground!

bummer..... that's gonna be a spendy fix. I'm pretty sure that hub is not Ti like was said by that "one guy" over on RR> I believe they are stainless.
Most likely that part was doomed from the day is was produced... I'd bet it was defective with some microscopic cracks present.
Makes you wonder if magnafluxing or other NDT should be done on mission critical parts. Can you please shoot a very close up macro shot of the failed area?
my pilot has the copter. i will tell him not to throw those parts away and i will post a macro as soon as i can. having been in the optical business for the better part of 10 years - i will be able to tell if it was stainless or titanium. both metals sound very different.

AWW MAN !
Another way to test if something is Titanium appart from the weight and sound.
This is DT . Titanium throws a white spark and SS will throw a dull red spark.
I didn't know to JB weld the brass inserts in place on new tail blades.
Uh...neither did I...until now.
Good thing, as my camera ship is literally in the "final stages".
I may not maiden it tomorrow...but I'm pretty sure I'll be spooling it up and ground-checking it.
DJ - here is a link to that particular shot of the fractured metal. it is a full size JPG and 3.5MB. download it and zoom it if you want. will take other macros of it when i get it.

Hey Hyde...
A little trick I learned that saves money on the $150 landing gear is to take 8 of those aluminum skid brackets on your existing landing gear and use a 1/2" drill to open them up just a little. Get some 1/2" aluminum tubing from Lowe's or Home Depot (or wherever - should cost $3 to $5 per 3 foot tube). Cut two pieces to fit horizontally under the heli and mount to the frame. Slip the brackets over the ends, cut 4 smaller verticle pieces and attach. Now use the other 4 brachets to attach to your skid. It looks OK, is strong enough to work well and when you bend the LG and need to do a repair either bend the rod back straight or spend $4 and your back in business.
I just got tired of paying over $100 for a few pieces of aluminum.

guess I'll have to participate in this subject over here from now on as Mark Ryder as of 3 minutes ago just gave me the boot (yet again). :noteworthy
I concur about fabricating your own landing gear. you can buy 12mm tubing and a cheap tubing bender and make them all day long for about $30-40. Just reuse your end pieces from the existing skids.

doesn't bother me at all... all anyone has to do is do a search on my business name and they get all that info anyhow.
I suppose I'll leave all those fellas alone now. I got out of it what I needed. :D

yep! I find it amazingly IRONIC!
I could have NEVER EVER EVER EVER posted my full page like that EVER! lest Mr. Ryder pull the thread so fast it'd make your head spin... and to see Mr. Ryder himself posting my site is freaking ironic as all get out!~
