Hi all....I am driving 100 miles in the morning to the hobby shop to buy my first heli!! A Titan 50 with Hyper 50, 401 gyro/servo combo. Oh, and some training gear!!

Anything else I should be looking for while there as it's a ways away?

I have been flying fixed wing for too many years and have all the glo clips, starter (getting the shaft) etc.

Any tips, advice on building? I downloaded the instruction manual which looks more like a parts exploded view rather than instructions :?

Thanks

Mike

I have a brand new in box never ran Hyper 50 if you want to buy it let me know. I also have a used Hatori jk tuned pipe...it's the best for the OS Hyper.

$170 for the engine Shipped in USA - New In Box Never Fired
$95 for the pipe shipped in USA - Used but in A+ shape.

If they have it pick up PV0499 upgraded tail hub and some hayes clunk line and replace those items when you build it.

Dont forget a glow plug extension wire unless you want to pull the canopy to start it every time.

Some silicon dielectric grease and small snap ring pliers and blue locktite as well.

Several building tips. All engines come with a washer that is intended to go between the fan and the engine. On Raptors you do not use that washer. The Raptor fan is designed so that it properly rides on the front bearing inner race. If you use the washer you may cause the clutch to score the clutch bell causing a clutch bell failure. I know the clutch bell has been redesigned for the Titan, so this may not be the case. Nevertheless the washer is not used. Also, the fan and fan nut must be on very tight. Almost every new Raptor pilot has had his fan unscrew on his first or second start attempt. Remove the carb and stick a tooth brush handle into the crank to lock it while you tighten the fan bolt. Do not use a crank lock that screws into the glow plug hole. You will dent the top of the piston. Use at least a 6" ratchet when tightening the nut. You cannot get it tight enough with a prop wrench. The clutch must be attached very securely to the fan with thread lock. Make sure that the screws don't bottom before the clutch is tight. There have been some fans that the screw holes haven't been threaded deep enough. If this happens to you simply grind a little off each screw until your clutch is on tight. It is possible to put the tail pulley and tail pulley flange (page 15) together incorrectly. The smaller end of the flange (the smaller part) goes into the pulley. If this is built incorrectly you will have about 2mm in and out play in your tail rotor shaft.

Good luck and have fun.

I second that tail hub upgrade, it's $5 and will save a lot in the way of prevention. Definitely change clunk lines, the stock ones are very thin.

When you put the frame halves together some people recommend using CA on the screws which is good, just make sure you put the CA on the SCREW first and not in the holes, otherwise you'll glue the frame together and will never get it apart. I learned this from experience.

I recommend not using CA in the frame screws. One misplaced drop and your frames are united forever. The screws stay in just fine without the glue. I'm getting close to my 50th Raptor 50 build and I've only used CA once and never again. No one has ever complained about their screws loosening. Snug them up good an tight without stripping the plastic and you'll be good to go.

OK, just got back from the city with me new Rappy 50...gee I feel like a kid at Chrsitmas time!!

The shop did not have the new tail hub but will order it in for me. Where do you guys get that nice "braided" wiring conduit I have seen in some pictures, it looks really cool and keeps things together.

Cheers

The new gears. Larger blades.

Two of the things he least needs to worry about on his first heli. Not to mention the fact that the upgrade gears haven't been seen in north america yet as far as I know. If they have, it's recent.

Extra blades, yes.

The PV0499 suggestion is a good one - the stock piece sucks. Must have a million extras which is why the titan kit still comes with the suck unit.

The dielectric grease, snap ring pliers and loctite you can get from a hardware store.

I'll throw in a suggestion to get a set of ball-link pliers - the green handled ones if they have them and your budget allows.

You'll destroy the stock links quickly pulling them on and off without the proper tool.

Let me just say how thankful I am for all the suggestions and thoughts given, this is a very friendly heli forum.

Just to touch base. I got what I thought was a very good deal at the closest hobby shop to me. I priced out Heliproz and had the hobby shop in Calgary match it very well indeed, besides the exchange rate obviously.

What I ended up with was:

Raptor 50 Titan
OS Hyper engine
Futaba 401 Gyro/servo combo
Rotopod training gear
MAH 600TD blades
Remote glow ignitor
Diff fuel tubing for main tank
TTPV011 header tank
Century Ball link pliers (curved tip)
TT Blade carrier
Century hex start wand
Futaba HD switch
Rays Heli book
An empty bank account!!

The new PV0499 tail hub was ordered

I look forward to reporting back how things are going if anyone is interested that is.

I have G2, is there a Raptor 50 download for it anywhere?

Cheers

Mike

Check out www.raptortechnique.com. So much stuff there and the instructions/tips there for the build is more then excellent!

The Titan comes with a header tank, unless they've changed it. Shouldn't have needed to buy it.

I wouldn't use the MAH blades for your first flights. You're virtually guaranteed to plant the heli at some point in the early stages so why break the good ones? Once you can fly it around and bring it back to yourself and land in one piece...go for it. But for now, stick to woodies but don't forget to glue the reinforcers on. If you're not sure how..ask. THere's plenty of good info on the web on gluing 'em.

Besides...if you biff it into people or property, the CF blades might do a lot more damage than woodies - they're heavier and stronger. Like an aluminum baseball bat vs a toothpick. :)

The Titan comes with a "how to" on gluing the woodies...
