View Full Version : Has anyone compared the G90 gyro to the 401 gyro?

Does anyone here have some 1st hand knowledge or experience in comparing the e-Flite G90 gyro to the Futabe 401 gyro? I'm wondering if the G90 would work fine on a T-Rex? At the LHS they said no way should I use it but it didn't seem like they really knew much about the G90.

I don't know much about the G90 either, but I do know you really shouldn't settle for less than the 401 on a T-Rex.

Everyone at the LHS seems to think the same but I was wondering if the 401 is that much better than the G90? I really like the fact that the G90 is only 9 grams.

the g90 is not going to have the holding power the 401 has.. so 3D will be more difficult... the g90 will not run a digital servo either

Not true. The G90 has a digital setting. Can't vouch for how good it does, but it does have that setting.
Cheers!

Yeah, the G90 has dual mode HH or standard you can select from the TX, digital servo setting, remote gain control, etc. Seems to do what the 401 does. Just don't know if it does it good enough.

I've been asking about the G90 in rec.models.rc.helicopter and not heard a lot of good about them. I wouldn't even consider anything less than a 401/9650 for a T-rex.
Now, having said that, Heliproz has some LogicTech (No, not the computer accessory company Logitech) gyros they say perform just as well as the GY611 and a 9256 servo. I haven't spoken to anyone about it and ended up with the 611/9256 for my 600.

The Blade is much smaller then the TREX, I would not put a 401 on a Blade. Too much weight.

To the topic of the 401...
I find it interesting, that there is already something like a religion around it... It almost appears to be a definition, that if it does not have a 401, it will, no, it cannot fly...
(That statement should appear as a humorous observation, no personal or ethic attack... ;) I know the powerful features of the 401, but I would think of it as an overkill, putting it on a Blade...)
I would as well be very much interested in the workings of the G90 gyro...!
Has anyone a working setup?
I tried this weekend a new micro-sized gyro from Graupner (A510-G HL).
Let's say the sensitivity was ok, but the amount of correction in HH was too much due to the Tailmotor acting too slow. Either I had a drifting tail with almost no correction, or - with just a very itty-bitty bit of more gyro gain - I already had the tail wagging around.
Additionally, that point where flying was almost possible, was at perhaps 10% sensitivity. Anything above, you had very hard tailwagging, if you go below, you'd better remove the gyro since flying without a gyro might feel like that and you can save the weight... ;)
Normal mode was quite good, though.
That zigzagging of the tail in tight turns is reduced greatly while in hover you still have enough correction for the tail not to drift around allover the place.
Quite good acting on normal indeed, but the HH-mode gave me such a fright that I did not even try to fly a circuit...
Now I wonder, whether that G90 has a different curve that has been designed with the two-motor heli (with the therefor slow acting tails) in mind?
Problem is, the european division of EFlite has decided, not to have that gyro introduced into european market...
So I have to have it shipped overseas.
In itself no problem at all, but I can't just go to the lhs and "loan it for a spin" and give it back if it doesn't do what we thought it would do...
So I'd like to know whether or not that gyro holds what it promises... Literaly speaking... ;)
Cheers,
Daniel

I have two T-Rexes that were purchased with 401's on them.
On my CPP, I purchased and installed a G90 mostly because of cost.
I'm new to helis so I don't have a religious affiliation with the 401 series (though I am a Futaba man). It's a great gyro. So is my G90 as best I can tell. The G90 just may be better and easier to set up, at least on small helis like these. ;)
I just ordered a G90 for my T-Rex SE. Money left over for other things.

I have a 401 in my trex 450 and my MX 450 and a g90 in my HDX300 the g90 is ok but doesn't have adjustable end points like the 401. Also in hard pop tricks the tail clicks out a bit and the 401 doesn't .
