I personally found that the optical was a lot less reliable and predictable, especially on the GV-1.
The upside of teh optical is you don't have to drill and rebalance the fan???
The standard sensors work excellent.

Another upside is the optical does not have to be so close to the fan.

how many people have had problems with the optical not performing right.. due to the sun, etc

With Shannon as my witness I have had two R60's with optical sensors and GV-1's that were just a little unpredictable.

I've been selling the optical sensors for the GV1 and the TJ for over two years. I have never had a problem with the optical unit swamping due to sunlight.
I have flown my Fury Extreme inverted in the middle of the hot Tx. summer and NEVER had an issue with it on the GV-1 and now I have replaced my GV-1 with a TJ Pro, no problems there either.
I cannot agree that there is something inherently wrong with optical sensors. They can't skip if setup properly...

Yea I'm definitely no expert. If they were not any good I doubt people would be selling so many, and you would see them installed on a TON of machines. I don't know what my problem was.. and I did not do muxh experimenting to try to figure it out.

I used the blue TT fan and sprayed it flat black before installing the reflective tape. I think one of my problems is that fuel ate away at the cheap ass black paint I used and it started getting TT shiny blue again.
Use good paint if you have a shiny fan.

One word of caution-- with the mag type sensors everyone sees it as obvious that you need to rebalance th fan. People often do not realize how "heavey a small piece of tape or a small section that is not painted- really is. I did not balance my fans until recently- now I do and you can usually feel the diff. I balance a lot of friends fans now too. :)
Check out the vid in my signature.

I have use the standard and now the pro with a 810g this combo or a 9253 is the way to go in super servo mode, the smoothness is awesome and you will never out race the TJ, and never see any lag in a slow decent its on top of your game. I did have a problem where the optic was losing the tape for a moment and the engine would race up and come Wright back the fix was to make sure the optic was 90* to the fan. If this is still happening you can put a peace of shrink tube up over the optic to shade the senor it gets a better read and will not be wash out from sun light. The optic should be at lease 1/4 inch away for the fan, the optic reads better farther away to close and the signal will bounce off and not get a clean read
