start with setting up your radio for -5 MAX in throttle hold, climb or descend to 6 feet or so and hit the hold switch. Practice the baby autos until you feel moderately comfortable with the difference in 'feel'.
When you are ready to do a 'real' auto, approach nose into the wind 150' or better nose slightly down and hit hold. Hold slightly below mid-stick for the first tries, manage your headspeed and concentrate on getting the machine to slow it's forward speed, flare and land.
Try them on the sim, and it's a breeze in real life.

The other thing I have my students do it up the throttle hold point till the clutch is engaged for their first few up high autos so they have a little room for error at the bottom, then decrease it as they get comfy.

I've been practicing mine as both Wayne and BarracudaHockey suggested in addition to offering more control it offers an easier "Bail Out" plan.
