No, you need to use a 6S charger to charge a 6S pack. I ahve seen some funky setups where people use two 3S chargers to charge a 6S pack - but honestly, you need a 6S charger and balancer to charge these packs right. Balancer being the key word here - I would suggest either a FMA Balancepro or a TP 1010/210 (my favorite). The TP setup can be found for around $260 new from the right place, whioch is about the ost of one flight pack. I wouldnt trust a $200 pack to a lesser charger. Just my 2 cents.

You will need a 6S pack to fly the 600, I doubt a 4S pack would do much, if anything. Anything above 4000mah would be good. The Align 4400mah 6S packs are good for just flying around and can be found for $180. If you are doing aerobatics, go for the Flightpower 4900 packs or the TP 4500/5000 packs.
For what it's worth....we stuck one of my 5-cell packs on a friend's 600. It hovered...but it wasn't too happy about it.
We did NO reconfiguring for the reduced voltage, so some of the unhappiness may have come from the fact that my pack voltage at full power would be roughly similar to a 6cell pack at low voltage cutoff.... As a result it had a power-fluctuation induced wobble to it while hovering.
The align ESC sounded a bit sickly on the powerup beeps as well.
I wouldn't even THINK of trying 4 in a 600. :)
