Has anyone groped or tried out the new Canon Rebel XTi 10 MP camera yet? It's pretty new but it seems to be in stock at all the online stores. It looks to be 10 or 20 grams heavier and about the same size as the previous Rebel.
I'm mostly wondering how the image quality compares to the previous models. dpreview has some info on it but not a complete review, yet. It does seem to shoot a little faster than the previous model which might be handy, more shots when in the air.
Continuous shooting burst increase: Thanks to faster processing and an increased internal buffer the EOS 400D can shoot a burst of 27 JPEG or 10 RAW images at three frames per second before the shooting rate slows. This is almost double the performance of the EOS 350D.

My dad and I are going to go look at one and a few new lenses sometime this weekend for his birthday. He loves mine but really likes the idea of a bigger screen. I'll report back when we return. I think the body only sells for $800 at most places/sites so not bad.

Went to National Camera Exchange in MN for my dads b-day se he could get a new camera. Natcam.com they have a ton of used lenses and cameras, great staff as well. I will be buying all my future camera related stuff here unless I can find a MUCH better price online.
We looked at the Canon Rebel XTi (EOS 400D) as well as the nikon D80, both 10 megapixel DSLR cameras. He loves my XT and was planning on going with teh XTi and a nice lens we could share.
He ended up going with the Nikon D80 for a couple reasons. He can use all his old school nikon lenses from his old 30mm cameras. And he has a TON of lenses. Also even though the D80 and XTi screens are the same size...the Nikon screen is simply amazing. Its brighter, clearer, more colorful and you can actually see it in sunlight. This was a huge deciding factor for dad because hes gettin up there in the years and had trouble reading mine.
He was able to get a real 18-55 lens instead of the low quality one that comes with the XT and XTi. I have yet to compare pictures side by side but I have high expectations for the D80.
Not saying the XTi is bad but in his case its superior.

I dropped by the camera store this weekend to check out the Rebel XTi a little. I'm wanting it to put under my heli and fly it around so I went to Wolf Camera simply because of their optional insurance policy. They're definitely not the cheapest place to buy it or the lenses but I could touch it and feel it and play around with it a little.
It's pretty small, smaller than the original rebel at least. We hit it off right away and it eventually followed me home.
I did get it with that mediocre stock kit lens. It will definitely be the 'beater' lens. They didn't have many lenses to pick from but I ordered a 20 mm and a 70-300 mm zoom. The guy at the store said I should have them this week. I'm racing to get it all going before the leaf colors peak.
Canon removed the little lcd screen and just added the info to the larger color LCD screen, so the battery run time has got to suffer a little. As soon as the lenses get here I'll give it a good thrashing.
I looked at the Nikon D80, it IS a great camera, both are far better than I can make use of. I already had a few bits and pieces that would fit the canon so I went for it for the same reason your dad went with the nikon. I'm itchin to get that 20 mm lens up in the air.

I tried out a VERY VERY nice 11-18mm lens that I will be picking up as soon as I can afford it. Not fisheye but pretty dang close. Can't remember the make but to was around 600.
Will be nice to not have to fly WAY out to get a big/long building

Hi Nitrospazzz,
That would be the Tamron the 11-18 mm. The lense is light weight, but if you are willing to pay 600 dollars also have a look at the Sigma 10-20mm and the Canon 10-22mm.
You can read tests from the above 3 lenses here: http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews
(tested on a rebel XT)

Thanks for that link Menno, it was the Tamron. Very nice but its pricey I agree.
I'll have a look at those other lenses, would be nice to have something left over after buying the lens.
Wow just looked at that lens again...thats about what I paid for my camera

I have another Tamron lens and it made the quality of my pictures just that much better. The good news is since these are standard lenses, if in a few years you upgrade to a newer camera the glass will still be good!

Only if your new camera is also APS-C (1,6x crop) and not full size sensor
Before I bought my Sigma 10-20mm I spent a lot of time thinking about it beeing a lense that was only suitable for APS-C sensors. What if I upgrade my camera, wil I still be able to use my lens? Well, I bought it anyway and it already paid for itself over and over again.
Till now I have only used it on my pole, and it really helps me in those tight spots where the 18mm didn't cut it.
It will still be a sore feeling if I can't use the lense on a future camera, but for me it's about the pictures that I can take today.

The question is do you want to spend the money to go "Full Frame" ;)

Hey guys, good thread here. I just sold my Nikon D50 and originally planned on buying a D40 for the weight savings. I have been sitting on the fence over Nikon and Canon and have considered the Xti. I actually bought one from Circuit City and returned it because it badly underexposed everything. I'm starting to wonder if I got a bad copy or ?
I am amazed by the pics that came from my 6mp Nikon, so that's why I wanted the D40. I also have quite a few Nikon lenses, so I would have to start over with Canon. I know Canon is popular and tons of people shoot them. What kind of results are you guys getting with the Xti??? Should I switch?

This forum is a goldmine of knowledge! Thanks Debiandog Dan, now I'm too scared to buy a new camera in case its crap/outdated by the time I open the box! :)
I now have to think about getting bigger heli to carry a camera with a big sensor :D:D

Ok, why? It is a lot heavier, larger, and costs much more. Tell me why it's worth it.
