Hi folks!
This might be an old topic, but has anyone thought of using an onboard generator like this:

Maybe use it to power the servos and/or gyro. Or maybe even extend the charge of the lipo?

Yup, someone has thought about it: http://mysite.verizon.net/vze49gsg/

:) Raja is a member here. Look for "rbort" in the Gasser forum.

You cannot use an electricity generator in an ectric heli, I saw your post in the trex section, if you have any knowledge of electricity what so ever you would have never even though about posting this bs..

Its hard to be humble when youre as perfect as you are, huh?....jerk

A little clear thinking reveals that it doesn't make sense to try to use a generator in an eHeli.

In a perfect universe with 100% efficiency, no friction, no losses, you would only get the same total available power from battery+generator as you had from the battery alone.

In the real world the laws of physics prevail and the total conversion from stored chemical energy in the battery to useful work in the heli (that's driving the motor, radio, servos etc) will be LESS with a generator in the system than without it.

To put it another way, you cannot get something for nothing. The generator will put additional load on the motor, drawing more current from the battery, but will not create as much electrical power as it consumes, hence shortening flights times due to both the increased weight and the increased mechanical/electrical load.

Turns out it is not a clever idea.

Well...

The original poster _DID_ say "to power the servos and/or gyro" _OR_ "extend the charge of the lipo"

Clearly extending the charge of the lipo is absurd.

However, he could use the generator to power the servos and gyro. It just wouldn't be very smart - you'd still need a small battery (or (U)BEC) to power the receiver until the generator came on line...and even after the fact, the (U)BEC is much more efficient at powering the electronics than the generator would be.

So you COULD...it just isn't wise.
