Man I'm hearing more problems about these main gears. Outrage fixed their tail pulley problem, why don't they fix their main gear? Does outrage read these forums? Does castle creations read these forums? Maybe they just don't care:dontknow. A person shouldn't have to buy some special (non stock) gear to keep your bird in the air. Toyota's not selling a separate brake system so you can stop your car. Their fixing it (I think). Although pizza hut sales bread sticks without sauce, but you can purchase sauce if you want it.

OK.. back. Thanks for the quick response guys.. and Josh.. they do read these forums... in fact Clyde up above works for Outrage.
I am running 13T with the Neu motor. Mesh various from NO gap at the high end to very little tick at the low end.
Is my collective set too high? Any other tips to prevent this?
I wasn't flying THAT hard... I did a few full upright and inverted punches... just so fun... even with a 13T is there enough torque to strip? Or just a weak gear?

Sly, I don't think Outrage can afford to pay my salery haha, Steven my son is a factory sponsored Outrage pilot, I'm just his "Pit Beeeach" I also help the team and Charley anyway I can on the forums and at events, I actually work for ADT Security full time now for 34 years, keeping Steven's stuff in the air is another full time job :YeaBaby: and I'll be starting to go thru everything again getting ready for B-Ham in two weeks

I don't understand why the gears are having problems, this was addressed a long long time ago, heck Steven hasn't stripped gears in over a year on his 6S or 8S machine and he beats the poop out of them, and Yes the Team Outrage guys do read the forums and we communicate with Charley constantly, in fact Steven and Charley flew yesterday together.

Josh only a handful of ppl are having problems, MANY kits have been sold, its not a design issue. Pete flying in the cold depths of hell doesnt help either.

Clyde.. you and your son must be pros at setup.. what is your recommendation on mesh, etc
Btw.. I am using the Rhino 13T hardened steel pinion...

Which tooth is missing? I refuse to fly without all lateral incisors except maybe a 450 with no wind.

It was tooth #124

Sly, we also run the Rhino pinion
I use a piece a printer paper and cut about a 1/2 strip about 6 " long and slide it between the pinion and gear, push everything up tight, lock it down and spin the paper out. Charley can take the gear in his hand and actually feel the play and tell you if the mesh is correct or not, he is the "ZEN MASTER" I've watched him at the field set mesh that way and its always spot on

Doesn't everyone set backlash just by feel ?

Some set by feel and some set by the method Clyde described...news paper works good also...if it cuts the bottom out a little too tight :)

Rock, paper, scisors, dude.
I use the scisors to cut the paper and if I can't get the mesh set I hit the pinion with a rock until it lines up :Bang:Slap

I've always set it by feel on my 450 and 500... got good at it.. but apparently the 550 needs a tighter mesh.. I'll try the paper trick on the high end next time tx!

Capi, I don't want you to think I'm ragging, especially since I haven't had this problem yet (only got about 6 flights so far, Iowa=cold). And, (by the way) I appreciate all the help and advice) Anyways, I have read 4 or 5 different post about this problem, that seems like a problem. Yeah some birds might have weak parts that break easier in a crash than others, but hey, designers don't build these things to crash, but to fly. If I put a V8 in a geo metro I shouldn't expect the tranny to hold up, But I think pete was running 6s with a neu. 10 to 15 dollar part can add up to a lot if she drops out of the sky. I will end this note on saying I do love this bird so far, makes me smile hearing her fart in the air:thumbup:

Josh i know where you are coming from, but remember over the net we only hear about the problems. So if 200-400 kits have been sold and you have seen 4-5 problems... I myself have stripped a few gears, i average about 50-75 flights between strips. I had been running an align pinion before and just recently just changed to a rhino pinion to see if that helps. But I am running a 11T which is just about the worst possible mesh possible. I should really be running a 12T and gov it down to get a better mesh but its flying so dang well i don't wanna mess with it.

OK.. new gear on.. is a tad smaller.. so now all around the entire turn.. I can get a little "click click" when moving the main back and forth.. about what I'd use on my 500.... am I correct that that is too MUCH for the 550? Or should I try that. Clyde with the paper trick.. do you get a click click even at the high side of the main gear?

Darn it sorry.. did it again... I am running a 12T pinion. :arggg:

When i set mine i have almost none. i find the average spot on my main gear (not the high spot) and set for no backlash there. It will be alittle tight in a few spot but it will wear in after a few flights, as long as the motor isnt getting hot you arnt in any trouble.

oki... so click click all around not going to fly pardon the pun. I'll adjust it later. Geeze now I am worried I used my only spare gear! I need to order some more.. I can imagine a possibility of happening again until I get it just right. I'll lower my collective to so I don't get so much demand on the pinion/gear.

For some reason, the only half of the equation anyone has mentioned in this thread is the mesh. How about power delivery? The Castle ICE 100 gain can be adjusted, making a substantial difference in power delivery. I was amazed how much I could rock the bird in a tic toc, depending on the gain level setting on the ICE. I am confident that this too has a role in applying too much torque in a sudden fashion. An overly sealous collective input and high gain would seriously increase the stress to the gears. If the mesh is also less than optimal, we'd then potentially see a failure. I have my gain setting pretty low at 18.

I lowered mine as well before my first flight knowing about in flight stripping. I'll have to check it again to see where it's at.
