Tried this setup today with a 13 tooth pinion at 2000rpm and it seems to do very well. I am concerned about how much more mah it took than my Hacker C50-19xl/CC phx-45hv setup used but I will need more flights to see what the norm is. Anyone else give this a try?

How much did it take?

How much did it take?

Second flight was approx 6-7 minutes. The motor and batteries were rather hot, more than I am comfortable with. The performance was great though... :)

It seems that the first recharge was approx 5500mah (out of 8400 since I am charging 4 11.1v-2100mah batteries in parallel) The first flight was approx 1-2 minutes of running on the ground in zero pitch to figure out the throttle curve plus an approximate flight time of 5 minutes.

The second flight took very close to 6000mah (out of 8400).

That's not too much but it is more than the 4000-4500 that I was using with the hacker setup. Another consideration is that the headspeed is up from 1750 to 2000 so that would account for some of the gain. :)

Wow, if your numbers are right that's alot. Maybe change pinions? For comparison, I am running a C50-10XL and 45HV. My average mAh varies from 360 to 400 per minute depending on how I fly. I recently reduced the headspeed and got down to 300/min, but performance sucked. This motor uses more than the a30-8xl but only by 40-60/min. I keep a log and figure the mah/min for every flight and the numbers are consistent, 9 min flight costs me 3400-3700mah out of a 5000 pack, pack never gets over 110 at the worst, motor does run around 150. Is your throttle curve near 100% or are you limiting it with the esc? What c rating are the batteries?

wait a minute, are you running this as a 3s4p or a 6s2p?

6s-2p, I just charge in parallel as 3s-4p :)

I would go down to a 12 or 11tooth but I don't know where to pick up a mod .5 that will work. I will try changing the advance from mid to low and see if that helps. There is plenty of grunt for what I do so maybe there will be enough with the low timing.

I'm not familiar with the esc you're using, maybe it's not the best, but I believe you're holding the motor back too much, you should be seeing around 2200 -2300 with that combo.

Ok, going back to the Hacker C50-15xl and a slightly larger pinion to run 2000-2100 headspeed. I am running 2000 with the lighter Align motor/esc and it is much more nimble than it was with the Hacker motor at 1790rpm. I also got 10-12 minutes with the Hacker and the lower rpm. With the Align motor at 2000 rpm, the motor and batteries are much hotter and the flight times with the same battery config as the Hacker is cut in half. (5-6 minutes for the same mah draw)

It will be interesting to see the numbers with the bigger pinion on the Hacker. I wonder if you got a bad Align motor, does it feel stiff?

I don't know if the Align motor is bad or not. It feels about the same as the other one we are using in the Trex-600. Hard to start turning but feels ok once you get it past the magnets. I looked around for a larger pinion and all I found was one tooth larger. (19 to a 20) I thought I had a 21 or a 23 around here somewhere... I will try the 20 and see how high I can get the HS. If it is not enough I'll buy the larger one. :)
