View Full Version : Really Cool TV AP Opportunity!!

I had the opportunity the other day to team up with Gary Travis to do AP for a T.V. shoot. The shoot was an episode of a home makeover series being shot in Salt Lake City. It was pretty cool. Got to meet and rub shoulders with some “big shots” in the industry, and gain some invaluable experience.

This was the real deal, and I feel privileged that I got to be a part of the shoot, and am really excited, cause it looks like Gary and I have scored a contract to do the next seven episodes after this one is done. Plus, all the contacts I was able to make while there, may lead to other big time jobs in the future, not to mention the future contacts we will probably make while doing the next seven episodes.

It was really fun, cause these producers, directors, and cinematographers were coming up to me and asking me all these questions about mine and Gary’s helicopters and wondering how they worked, and all that. It was cool to see how impressed they really were by the technology after I explained it to them. And when it was time to fly, the helicopters were the main attraction. It was cool.

I have some photos of Gary and I working on the set, and doing some AP if anyone is interested in checking them out. Just click on the thumbnails below to enlarge.

5 days so far and 15 days more to go on this one. Kind of tireing though as I have to wait around a few hours at a time for things to happen. It was great that Brady came down as My canera person got ill. It's 630 AM here and I am about to get back at it, should be a little easier today as a friend of mine flew in from New York last night to help out, and another is flying in on Monday. The good news is that maybe with a little luck I may shoot some with the turbines today.

Wow Im impressed, its always cool to be on a set and being a integral part of the action. Im suprised you have time to post on HeliFreaks with a busy schedule like you. Maybe when shooting is done you can host a little of the video youve shot. I love this stuff as you can tell.

what type of video camera is that?

There were a few cameras that we used. We were shooting in DV and HD.

I believe the one that is on the heli in this particlualr shot was the Canon GL2 DV camera.

Sorry, but after getting some inquiries from some people it looks like I need to clear something up.

First of all, it won't do you any good to PM me or call me about how this contract to do this was obtained. If you have any questions about that, you need to contact Gary Travis. His company actually owns the contract. I don't have any of the answers.

I just was lucky enough to be in a position to help Gary out in a quick pinch when his camera operator fell ill. It was a tremendous experience for me, and I got to learn first hand what it's like to be involved in a big time operation like that. Thanks to Gary for thinking of me.

I hope that through this experience with the knowlege I gained, and the people I was able to meet, that I will be able to continue to pursue this kind of work.

My first post might have been a little misleading the way I worded some stuff in my excitement over the whole experience. So, I hope this clears up any confusion if any.

Thanks

We did have a turbine cameraship with us however the Observer is doing well enough that we didn't get around to using the turbine. I have plenty more to shoot on this one and may use the turbine. I will let you know how it performs at a later date.
A few have asked to post some of the video that was shot, as some of you know when shooting cinematography stuff like this it is protected by non discloser agreements. Posting before the release of this stuff would not be good for buisness and would create some legal issues for sure. It is whithout doubt a totaly different game from shooting hobby stuff that you can use for personal reasons. Everything we shoot is owned by someone else, but That's how it goes.
I will be shooting some promo stuff outside of the US in the very near future, maybe we can get some of that up.

Gary,
I assume this was not the "extreme" crew based on your on site duration.

I tried that route last year when they were in town and it was a CLUSTER. :D

Best of luck to you guys.

Your correct Jason but it was still a cluster, and that is putting it mildly
