Can someone tell me what a normal gain setting would be on an Intrepid with a GY401? I have about a half gallon of fuel through a new Intrepid with a std boom. After making several carb adjustments to the low speed needle (leaning it out) the motor is running very smoothly; however, the tail is hunting back and forth. I've adjusted the tail with the gyro off and have it hovering very steady with heading hold off. My initial ATV gyro gain settings were +80 and -70. I've gone as low as +60 with very minimal improvement. Should I go lower or higher? I have 3 Raptors and all three of them are running at 100% on the gain with no hunting. Just want to know what some of you have yours set at. Thanks.

Sounds like you might want a shorter distance on your servo wheel so you can adjust your on the gyro travel up to between 100 ,120 percent and this will raise your TX settings and put most of the work back on the gyro.
What is your distance on the servo wheel ???

12mm from the center of the servo screw to the center of the ball on the arm. Anything shorter and I was unable to get full travel out of the tail. I had a conversation with Chris about the new tail bellcrank only having one hole in it now and in order to get full travel this was the solution. Shouldn't the hunting go away if I keep lowering the gain or is that going to create other problems? Thanks.

Are the thrust bearing installed correctly? Is the linkage smooth as a baby's bottom?

Which radio are you using?

Which channel is the gyro plugged into? Is there any revo mix or other setting/mixing turned on?

If you are at 12 mm and talked to Chris ,,you must have some other problem ... like a bind in the linkage some where or the tail control ball mounts being tight ( the metal part that the plastic ball links screw on to and mount to the tail rotor grip) Check to make sure these are moving very freely,,they can get water or cleaning fluid in there and rust up and not move really free. They also need to have some oil every once in awhile .
You should go down on your gain ,,but you should not have to be that low
All my 401's are in the high 90's except for one that has a not real fast servo on it as I run out of the right ones and just put this on to get by ,,but it is in the 45 area on HH and 40 in none hh.

Chris, the thrust bearings are installed correctly. After my last flight today I did think the tail rod ball links were tight so I reamed them both out a little more and the movement now is very smooth. Unfortunately, though, I didn't fly again after reaming them out so I don't know if it made a difference or not. I'm using a 9303 and the gyro is plugged into the gear channel. I have no mixing on anything.

Is the gyro gain function in the radio turned on or inhibited?

Chris, the gyro gain function is inhibited. Should it be on, and, if so, should it be set on auto or rudder D/R? I thought the ATV settings on the gear channel were adjusting the gain settings.
