View Full Version : More about the 600 Plus and excess head speed

I'm gathering that the reason for 6s max on the 600 plus is headspeed. I was hoping to use 7s just to increase my flight times. It seems that some people say it's okay with 9t pinion, but others think it's too much.

So the questions are:

1. which pinion would be best for this setup

2. couldn't a person just max out their curves at say 90% or so and not worry about excess headspeed? I'm just looking to do some sport flying and AP, no 3D here.

I tried and liked 7S emoli set up on my swift with a 9 tooth pinion it was very crisp. I had a problem with the 2300+ rpms though. I took one cell out and tached it at 1900+ which seemed to be just as capable but not as dangerous. The flight went longer , from 5.30 to 6.0 mins. I think the extra drag of the higher speed was heating up the batteries. I still put in about 2400 mahs after a good round of flips ect. My lesson learned was that the extra cell weighed more and the excess h/speed wasn't helping me either. If it was a lower kv motor , say 900 instead of 1100 I would go back to 7 or 8s just for the power. TimT

Thanks that's some good info. I was planning on getting the 9t pinion and now I'm really convinced. I never would have thought you'd get longer times with 6s vs 7s but your explination makes sense.

So, I'm wondering:

Could a person setup their curves to run at less than 100% to control the max headspead? Isn't that essential what a govener does? And, if so, then would I be more likely to get longer times on the the 7s since I wouldn't be pulling as many amps to get the same headspeed?

I always try to keep the gov setting above 85% and that is where I am getting the 1920 rpm's now. I tried to see what 100% would do but it was almost the same. Maybe 1950. If you use the gearing and voltage to get the desired rpm you will be better off. Using the gov setting too low, say 70% makes the esc heat up. The work is the same. It just turns the amps into heat. I just got home a little while ago from the field. I was rolling, flipping and just having the most fun. I was doing nice traveling flips and some inverted circuits, a few fast and low too. I get a kick out of this swift. The motor was $79.00 and the battery $80.00 each. Really is fun knowng how low the budget can be. Rock solid flier and free to fly! I flew one of my many glow birds and it was very nice but , ho hum, just like it supposed to be. TimT

Okay Tim, I think you have me convinced to do 6s on my heli. Not to mention the blinky balancer is alot cheaper than the 10s Tunder Tiger balancer.

So let me get it right: 600 plus motor, 6sEmoli, I have a CC45HV, the kits 515 mm woddies, I have no govener so I guess I'll just run it at 100% on the throtle curve.

Sound about right?

I'm using a set of carbon blades sold by Helimax. I got them from Tower hobbies for $39.00. You can set the gov. mode on your Castle creations ESC. I am using a CC Phoenix 80 That I had from another project. I set it for gov. setting with Idle up one, 85 points and idle up 2 is set for 100%. I fly it in both and find it very similar. Don't misunderstand though, it would have more power with a lipo but at the expence. I might get a lipo just to see some exterme 3-D. But it wasn't my original intention for this bird. Now that I see how solid it flys though I might change my mind. Maybe I might wait for the comming 620SE. Lots of carbon and aluminum stuff! TimT

Hey that's excitng.... carbon blades for under 50$. WOW. I thought for sure I'd be coughing up close to 75 for a set of carbons.
