Am I crazy or is this replacement feathering shaft too short?
Btw, this is part number R550312-SS, 76.45mm vs 93mm on bottom. Do I have a different head maybe? I did buy it used.:thinking

The short one looks like a 550 spindle and the longer one a 50 spindle.

Naw.. they are close enough.. just fly.
JK.. Yes.. and the longer one is also for the 550 FBL head which I use..

The longer spindle is for the Vel 50 grips, which can also be installed on a 550 if you use the Vel 50 grips you can still use the 550 center hub

Okay, so I'm not crazy. Apparently the PO put Vel 50 grips on it. Now I don't know if it's just the grips or the entire head. What's the size difference between in center hubs?

If you can use same center hub on 550 and v50 with the v50 grips. Wouldn't that make the center hubs the same width ?

Hang on I'll go out in the shop and measure a 550 center hub against a Vel 50 center hub, I'm pretty sure they are the same size where the spindle enters, but let me verify it.
And Capi, U have to splain it that he could use the larger grips with the longer spindle in the 550 :OKits OK, I know we have let you run amuck but were here to help you out again :YeaBaby:

The outside measurement of both the 550 Center Hub and the Vel 50 center hub is the same, the only difference if you intend to use the Vel 50 spindle is to use the Vel 50 grips which have larger radial bearings and thrust bearings

But he never asked about the 50 vs 550 grips ! I can't read minds !!! ..... but i am working on a machine that's coming close :)

There are slight differences between the 550 center hub and Vel 50 hub, the Vel 50 hub uses a new seesaw mounting design so to use the Vel 50 hub you also need a new seesaw, all the older center hubs should be gone at this point and you can only order the new, but trying to fit the new seesaw into an old hub doesn't fit.
What you can do is put the Vel 50 grips on your 550 with the addition of the Vel 50 spindle, I don't see any reason why the new Vel 50 center hub and seesaw wouldn't work on a 550, but maybe Charley will chime in when he gets back if I have missed something.

Gary just bought a new 550 kit for his wife Eve and while i was helping him out it gave me the impression the 550 now uses the larger seesaw bolts like the 50 does. Ill have to get him to take a photo for me to confirm tho.

Can you get it to do something about "KIDNEY STONES" I have been dealing with one that is 12mm in dia for two months now, yes today is a bad day growl :arggg:

Have him look at the type of bearing factory installed in the center hub, if its an actual bearing vs a brass insert then they are using the Vel 50 center hubs for the 550 also
Kinda makes sense if they both will fit on the 550 to just have one hub and seesaw to accommodate both heli's

So what you are saying is for us older 550 owners we keep our center hub and buy the v50 grips and spindle (longer ones).
If we wanted the beefier washout arms we get the v50 hub and the mixing arms too

I didn't say that, I'm still running the stock 550 grips on one of Steven's 550's
the point was the longer spindle can be used on the 550 if you use the Vel 50 grips, the original question from klamp was he bought a 550 used and it had a longer spindle with it and he wanted to know if he had the wrong one, that spindle was also used with the larger grips in the 550 flybarless head upgrade

What paddles are you using?
DominicD

KBDD. I don't consider paddles, blades, dampers or such as part of a stock kit, these are all things that a pilot changes to tailor the personality of a heli to suit them.

I tried to be funny, but Capi didn't take it that way. Sorry guys for this off topic discussion.

I agree with Capi, they are a pilot preference kind of thing, Charley had us test allot of prototype paddles with different main blades during the testing phase to come up with a very good paddle and tail blade that could be included with the kit that were flyable, some of the other manufacturers kits we've flown simply had something tossed in the box and we used to fly a certain paddle and tail blade combo for years regardless of what came in the kit.
Steven is flying the stock kit paddles on his 550, and SWE paddles on 2 of his Vel 50's and his night Vel 50 has stock paddles on it

If that was for me, ahhh yup pretty much :YeaBaby:
The other response is even simpler, sorry bu I have no recollection of that sir :tongue

It's not my fault !! I ordered the rear bearings i needed for my 50ST from rc-bearings but they are out of stock (not sure if i didnt notice or just poor timing) so my 50 has been down for a 1-2 weeks and counting. I was going to buy that YS56 but bought an Alpine deck for my car, needed the ipod function for the drive to IRCHA.

Nail on the head. I ordered the crash kit and the feathering shafts did not fit. So I ordered Vel 50 shafts and thrust bearings. Dampers and arms from 550 should work with the Vel 50 grips though, correct?
