Just go buy the Dremel or a Dremel clone. You'll wonder how you ever lived without it. Just make sure you get the cut-off attachment and disks.

I lucked out because my neighbor had a dremel. I cut about 1/4" of the shaft off and then put a small indent into the side of the shaft for the grup screw. Although the grub screw still protrudes a little from the side of the pinion. I imagine it's ok though as long as I have at least a little flat spot..
