Going all electric?

 How did you guess.

Yes I am going over to the electric side. I will miss the power and flight times of the big bad gasser but I think I will get over that relatively quickly. And I might have some extra $ left over after the switch to put towards a mast or possibly another Logo 10 for 3D.

Now if I could get some interest in the thing

Yeah, tell me about it. I've got another Raptor 50 frame sitting in the shop. Then I'm looking at the Condor on the shelf above it gathering dust.......

I love the way the Condor flies, but I like the way the Vario flies even better. I think I could use 2 E-Raptors more than 2 Gassers.

Poor Condor. It's just a matter of time. :(

But having 2 electric heli's would be sweet! :D

What I need now is a way to figure out how to pack 'em up so I can check them as luggage for traveling long distances......

Mark give me the dimensions of the size case you would need. I have a friend who works logistics at a company and they have a warehouse full of computers, chairs, hose, and heavy duty containers for shipping motherboards and expensive stuff. I am going to pick one up the the Logo and might be able to find you one. I know they would like to make some $ off the spare inventory so maybe we can help them out. I think the prices would be pretty reasonable, never asked for the bergen because they didn't have one big enough

Case in point...My old micro box

hmm, I would bet logo 10 will fit in an airline chekcable hard case. looks like 62" and 50lb is limit for lot of airlines. 62 (length +width+ height) pelican 1610 is 22x17x10 internal. hmm logo 10 breaks down easily anyway need to measure it, but I would bet it will fit.

Not meaning to hijack your thread Spazz......

But what I'm thinking is I could pull the boom off and seperate the heli from my mount (4 bolts). Pull the legs off the mount and drop the gimbal.

I'd have a raptor body, a boom, and the pieces for the mount. Pack 4 or 5 packs and a charger. There's a lot of places you could travel, make 4 or 5 flights, and come back home in a day for a daily rate if you could do what very few others are capable of doing well.

A front mount of DJ's might be even easier.

Check it as luggage and fly Southwest. Bill the customer for the daily rate plus expenses. I think there's a niche market for someone who can shoot video and get down where the full scale can't.

That is a GREAT idea Mark! I see those specials all the time in the paper for 99 dollars round trip to all kinds of places. Plus you definitely got the skills!!

nose mount is held on with 6 screws and is definitely much more compact. correct sized durable container is still a must. pelican have lot of sizes of nice cases. some of the pelican gun case may actually work. I am sure 1" or 2" oversized box will still get through without paying extra.

Mark, look around at what a lot of the 3d pro guys do. I have seen many pictures around the net of their travel setups.

Lots use a hardside golf case, bolt a pices of wood through the bottom and strap the heli down to that. They always remove the boom, and usually put 2 helis in there, butt end to butt end, and take a cutdown spare boom piece and put it into the boom mount for each heli as they are tail to tail and then strap down the landing gear of each so the wood plate they put in. Now the helis are connected and they help support each other in the case.

If your going to fly out of town for a day, a spare heli is a must I would think, and you said you have another raptor asking to be converted. :-)

Ahh, found a pict, they call them curtis travel cases.

Actually go to this gallery and scroll down and you will see a section called curtis case installation which shows the mods made to the case.

I do know that lot of airline will allow golf clubs /snowboard, etc case as standard checkin. I wonder if that is true if we are carrying anything else inside. I guess if they don't know, it is ok. :)

You might have trouble getting Lipos through since they technically are potentially explosive. Who knows though. Maybe they wouldn't ask. I think these days it's a lot more difficult.

I checked my Logo 10 in when I went to Michigan last August. I used a large tripod case. I stuffed about 5 5s lipos in there as well and it went through fine both coming and going

lipos are considered "dangerous goods" you can probably get through with them, but if you get caught the civil penalties are pretty steep. I work for united and the fines are in the $10k range for transporting unauthorized dangerous goods. I doubt that you could claim ignorance being an electric rc guy... just be careful, most guys won't know what they are looking at, but if they ask and you say batteries, watch out for trouble.... Your best bet would be "non-spillable power packs, the ends are protected from arcing" try to make them verbally appear like a sealed wheelchair battery.

AZ ChopperCam

not sure how they would be considered dangerous goods when travelers by the tens of thousands are carrying on laptops and portable DVD players with lipo's every day that are equally as dangerous (or safe?)

I dont know if this helps you guys out. Sorry to hijack the thread.

Except as provided in 49 CFR 173.21, consumer electronic and medical
devices (watches, calculators, cameras, cellular phones, lap-top
computers, camcorders, and hearing aids, etc.) containing lithium cells
or batteries, and spare lithium batteries and cells for these devices,
when carried by passengers or crew members in carry-on or checked
baggage for personal use. In addition, each installed or spare battery
must conform to the following:
a) The lithium content of the anode of each cell, when fully charged,
is not more than 5 g; and
b) The aggregate lithium content of the anodes of each battery, when
fully charged, is not more than 25 g.

Wow, who's going to be first to get their LiPo pack analysed for lithium content? :D:D

askman

so, cells like A123 is allowed, as almost entire lithium content is used when fully charged. plus they are extremely safe anyway. I remember only about half of the lithium is used in the typical lipo.
