View Full Version : Stronger Tail Booms
Has anyone else noticed that tail booms have a bigger OD?? I just received 2 booms that are .070" larger than the previous booms I bought. I must say that it's a BIG improvement. A bit of a hard landing on the old ones & a boom change was always in order. So just a few questions:
1 Are the plastic boom clamps the same external size & just bored
out .070" to accept the new booms or are they larger OD as well?
2 Are there new P/N's for the larger booms?
3 Are there new P/N's for the boom clamps, & horizontal fin clamp?
4 How much does this affect the C of G ? The new boom is quite heavier.
Any info on this would be great. Also I think it would be prudent to advise customers on here when parts change, that require other parts to mount it. As it is I had to bore out the plastic clamps to hold the boom on, but not everyone has a lathe & can do this. So more down time would be required to order more parts! Pay double shipping costs ect... :arggg:

Gyan...what length boom did you get? a standard gasser boom or the EB gasser boom? The EB boom is a more heavy duty boom...the outside diameter is a little larger and yes there is different tail boom clamps and horizontal fin clamps for the EB boom...although the outside diameter is the same as the thinner standard booms...
Thanks for the quick response Greg...but:
I think you mean "inside" diameter is the same as the old booms. I ordered the 33" boom for the STD gasser. but since I've bored out the clamps now I'd like the correct P/N for this heavier boom. I guess the wrong one was shipped ?? (But I like it better!!)
1) Are the clamps just bored out .070" or is the OD different as well?
2) Are there different P/N's for the clamps?
3) How much does this affect the C of G ?

Sorry Gyan, We had a oopsie.
We've had a number of customers order Gasser EB's but wanted to run 720 blades instead of 810's. So we would just cut the booms down to 33" and included the necessary gearing.
This became so "normal" that when ever Maryann asked us to cut down a boom, it wasn't questioned.
The standard gasser still uses and comes with the smaller diameter boom. The thicker boom is for the EB version, and yes, the clamps are different.
Give me a call, and we'll get you the correct parts.
Well I guess it was a mistake that I liked this time!! Surprised??? Anyway like I mentioned I already bored out all my clamps for this "new" type boom. AND at this point in time my landings can be..shall we say a "little hard" on tail booms  So no problem with sending me the correct parts. but I would like the P/N's of the heavier 33" boom & clamps please. I would like to order this type all the time now.

You can order the Twin 110 tailbooms, Twin 1665 boom clamps, and Twin 1667 horizontal fin clamps.
The boom is 37" long normally, either you can cut it yourself or remind us to cut it for you.
Does anyone know ...
1) Are the clamps just bored out an extra .070" or is the OD different as well?
3) How much does this affect the C of G ?
Thanks

Gyan...sorry...I guess I didn't say it very clear in my first post...but the OD's of the clamps are the same...as they still have to fit inside the frames to hold the boom on...so I would say they are just bored out a little bit for the larger OD boom.
as for the C.G. unless you have the big "industrial" gearbox that comes with the EB gasser then the C.G. change should be minimal...
That boom seems alot heavier Greg, thanks for the info on the clamps. All my regular Intrepid Gassers are going to run this thicker walled tail boom. I've always thought that the original boom was a bit too light for my liking (& inexperience, if you know what I mean  = hard landings!! )
Chris, wouldn't it be easier for everyone (manufacturer included here) to have an assigned P/N for the different boom configurations you supply? Instead of having to call you to special fab a 33" Twin 110 boom? For the EB or whatever? & take up your time. It would help to eliminate confusion & mis-orders if it was P/N specific.

I already have different P/N for the different standard booms that we offer.
A 33" HD boom is NOT a standard item.
