I was wondering if I can shorten the leads coming out of a gy 401 without affecting performance

If your capable enough with soldering very small connections you can. Only way I would shorten the leads is to do it at the circuit boards. You will need a fine tip and low wattage soldering iron.

Radical RC sells all kinds of electrical stuff. They have crimpers designed to install the pins in the connectors that are on the leads. They also have kits to make new ends for any servo lead. This way you dont have to be good at soldering or risk damage to an exspensive part. I have shortened many servo leads. The terminals ends they sell are the same ones used by the radio manufacturers.
