Boy it happens quick...
I'd crashed my 450 the other day and am waiting for parts. With no main rotor blades and flybar on, I had my heli sitting on my work bench while I was checking for a bent main shaft, playing with the servo functions and some settings on my new Futaba 8FG (awesome TX!).
Here's what I think happened: When I plugged the battery in, the helicopter was facing away from me at approximately 45 degrees to the right with the tail hanging off the bench by my left hip and this is where the gyro initialized. I pushed the tail away from me so now I'm looking at the right side. I had been moving my servos with the throttle hold ON and left the stick set at mid stick (80% throttle). Not thinking I flipped the switch above the throttle hold which selects Idle1 (same throttle/pitch curve) and in Idle1, the throttle hold becomes inactive. In the blink of an eye (no main rotor mass to slow the spool up), this thing wound up, the gyro tried to take it back to the original heading as I hadn't moved the rudder and while still holding my radio, the tail jumps to the right and the tail rotor took about 3 layers of skin off the back of my left index finger.
It could have been worse and is a good lesson for a new pilot...Treat that thing like a loaded gun when the battery is in it or you'll be sorry.
I guess that's why they're called "accidents" and not "on purposes".
