Boy it happens quick...

I'd crashed my 450 the other day and am waiting for parts. With no main rotor blades and flybar on, I had my heli sitting on my work bench while I was checking for a bent main shaft, playing with the servo functions and some settings on my new Futaba 8FG (awesome TX!).

Here's what I think happened: When I plugged the battery in, the helicopter was facing away from me at approximately 45 degrees to the right with the tail hanging off the bench by my left hip and this is where the gyro initialized. I pushed the tail away from me so now I'm looking at the right side. I had been moving my servos with the throttle hold ON and left the stick set at mid stick (80% throttle). Not thinking I flipped the switch above the throttle hold which selects Idle1 (same throttle/pitch curve) and in Idle1, the throttle hold becomes inactive. In the blink of an eye (no main rotor mass to slow the spool up), this thing wound up, the gyro tried to take it back to the original heading as I hadn't moved the rudder and while still holding my radio, the tail jumps to the right and the tail rotor took about 3 layers of skin off the back of my left index finger.

It could have been worse and is a good lesson for a new pilot...Treat that thing like a loaded gun when the battery is in it or you'll be sorry.

I guess that's why they're called "accidents" and not "on purposes".

That's strange. Idle 1 overrides throttle hold? So if you're flying along in idle up and hit throttle hold in an emergency situation, nothing will happen? You have to remember to flip the mode switch back to normal first? Something doesn't make sense. On my JR, throttle hold overrides everything.

Hold does override any idle up condition on the 8FG! Also hold has to be enabled!! By default it is disabled. I also I hope your not using Throttle CUT instead of hold? Cut will not override a condition. The default hold switch on that radio is on the right. Idle up by default is on the left so I think you have something not right in your radio programming.

Hey there! Thanks for all the great work on this site Finless. Great resourse!

I'm using the throttle hold... I had moved the HOLD to the top spot for priority on the CONDITION screen and assumed it was the priority.

I'm left handed so I set my tx up with HOLD on the left (long two position switch) and CONDITION on the 3 position above it. Right momentary is set to reset timer.

As became painfully clear to me (literally and figuratively), IDLEUP1 goes at the top of the conditions list and HOLD second to make HOLD omnipotent in all conditions.

I got my tx squared away shortly after I got my finger bandaged up
