Not heli specific, but the round Li-ion cells in the laptop are the same cells used by aftermarket battery manufacturers.

Damn! I would to see them display a LiPo failure.

My buddy's TP 5s4p in and IonX. He had a mild crash but as I was carrying the heli back from the field I heard a sizzle and then threw the heli down. He quickly removed the canopy and battery before it went up in flames.http://www.helifreak.com/album_mod/upload/533cbf221eb1037f298d5bc27de22653.jpg

Yeah. I recently saw the LiPosack video. Very mind altering display!

guess I'll be storing my laptop and lipos in a bunker out back from now on...

Pretty violent reaction. Wonder what the real failure rate is?

Now that's SCARY. Lots of us, plus the less well informed general public, tend to store these things indoors at home in Drawers or on a shelf or most likely just left in the host equipment.

So what is likely to set a Lipo or Lion off then (I mean aside from the obvious overcharging) Can an old ruined pack spontaneously ignite, or a pack that has had its foil covering punctured due to crash damage etc etc

i'm no expert. but, i've never heard of one spontaneously combusting. i believe the technical term for the event is thermal runaway. and, it is usually a relatively immediate reaction to puncture, or overcurrent (either charge or discharge). if the pack has cooled down, and there is no flow of electrons, there is nothing to induce the thermal runaway, and thus no potential for danger.

that's not to say something in your storage container might not shift, cause a short across the terminals of a pack, and lead to an event. but, that's hardly spontaneous---just not predictable.
