View Full Version : Charging a 14MZ with the TP1010 charger

Hi all,

I've got the 14MZ charging lead and a TP1010 charger but I'm not sure how to charge the 14MZ.
There is an option on the TP1010 which says: LiIon 4.1v
Does this mean that it peaks at 4.1v (which is correct) or that it can charge 4.1v liion cells?

HELP!

Got it. I just went ahead and charged it on the "liion 4.1v" option and it peaked at 8,2v which is correct.

Actually should be 8.4V max (~8.37V right after removing 14MZ batt. from charger). You're only getting 8.2 as most LiIon chargers will max at at 4.1V / cell. Does the TP1010 have a LiPo setting, which will give you 4.2V / cell, 8.4V max?

Yes ofcourse, but the Liion option is made for 4,1v liion cells... I charged it that way and the TX said it was 100% charged.

There battery in the 14MZ is a Li-ion so I the procedure Richard used is correct.
How much did you put into the battery Richard?

I'm well aware of the battery composition employed on the 14MZ and 12Z. What you don't seem to realize is that Futaba uses high-quality LiIon cells capable of taking on the 4.2V, as opposed to the common 4.1V. The Futaba charging cradle delivers 8.4V to charge the batteries. The procedure may seem to have worked properly, but you have not charged the battery to their max voltage. The Tx may have shown 100% initially, but it'll go down much quicker than if you had charged it to 8.4V. If the TP1010 has the LiPo option, then you should be using that to charge the batteries. The algorithm used to charge LiIon and LiPo is identical, so you'll have no problems.

1500mah or so! But it wasn't empty to start with... it was 40% full.

What you don't seem to realize is that Futaba uses high-quality LiIon cells capable of taking on the 4.2V, as opposed to the common 4.1V. The Futaba charging cradle delivers 8.4V to charge the batteries. The procedure may seem to have worked properly, but you have not charged the battery to their max voltage. That clears it up a lot!! Are you charging them like that? or anyone else??

If not, I think I'll just keep the safe margin and use the 4.1v option... I will only use this charger every once in a while when I can't find the original futaba charger :mrgreen: or when I'm at the field.

RCFan is correct. If the Futaba charger peaks them out at 4.2v per cell then the Lipoly option will charge them perfectly.
