View Full Version : Why is cyclic so slow on my Rave?

I originally set up my Rave with +/- 11 collective and 8 cyclic pitch. Collective is excellent but the first time I flipped my Rave, I could not believe how slow it was. I turned my swash mix up from 60 to 70 on ELE and AIL and it got a little better but still very slow. Went to 80 and it is now reasonable but still too slow for me. I just checked my cyclic pitch and it is 10. That is a LOT of cyclic pitch for how slow it flips and rolls.

I am running the bigger of the two paddles that come with the kit which are supposed to be the faster ones. I am running 4S swinging 350mm blades on a 90-85-90 V curve with a 13T pinion.

Any suggestions?

Other than the slow cyclic, the heli flies AWESOME!!! I really feel "connected" to the Rave.

I didn't like the roll rate with stock paddles, I'm using the CY's, Pretty quick.

Are you working the pitch or just rolling it over?

FF roll at :38 front flips starting at 1:02. Full AIL on rolls and full ELE on flips. 10 cyclic pitch.

I noticed the same thing on my Rave. I'd say to change the paddles for sure. I switched to KBDD paddles. They rock! Transformed the way it flys. They're super cheap and make it easier to see. Highly recommend them. Give 'em a try.

They are HOT!

I mount the flybar weights about half way out to tame the Stubz down a little and they are still very responsive.

Thanks for the replies. I really want to take the KBDDs off my Furion and put them on the Rave but I really like them on my Furion!! I will get a set on order. I have KBDDs on just about all my 450s.

Your HS is too low. I suppose you run 2221-10? This one on 14T 100% flat with 71 mm stock paddles and 10 cyclics give you fast flips and rolls.

I suggest you to try higher HS, 90~100% flat.

Also, KBDD paddles rocks on the Rave, I prefer them on the Stubz, much more stable and predictible and faster.

Yes, that is the motor I have. I need to replace the battery in my tach so I can measure head speed. Not sure if you watched the video I posted but climb outs are great at this head speed and 11 collective.

I will pick up a set of KBDDs for sure. They work great on my other 450s.

When you run your head speed up to around 3200 rpm you'll see quite a wake up in performance (even with the 71 mm stock paddles). And, verticle climbs are like a rocket with 12-14 degrees pitch.

when set up correctly the stock faster paddles should be more than enough. we 3d the heck out of my raves and have found the stock paddles to be perfect.

What kind of cyclic pitch are you running? What head speed? What size main blades?

i run around 3200 to 3400 head speed, running -8 motor on 4s but also run -6 on 3s for indoors and still decently fast. i dont measure my cyclic pitch as its not important, whats important is how it feels in the air.

I run 350's Radix HS 3200/3400, -10/14T 4S, and I tryed stocks 71 mm, Stubz, and KBDD. They all perform very well. I set my swatch mix AIL and ELEV to have 10, and then use DR/EXPO to switch between values and adapt the heli to my feeling of the moment/day.

I watch your video, flips are crazy slow I understand your temporary deception in this aspect.

IMO >> -10/13T 90-85-90 Vcurve >> this is the key of your disappointment, cause your HS is too low for this heli to really have fun.
For a flybared setup, 3100~3200 is a good start to go, try to run 100% flat curve and you're done!! You will discover how the Rave can have fast cyclics... and with KBDD it will become insane :D

Wow, you guys run a lot of head speed. Collective pop must be ridiculous.

I thought the point of the longer blades was the ability to 3D without having to spin it that fast. At least that is what Outrage claims for their G5. What kind of flight times to you get running those head speeds and what batteries are you running?

I am going to go tach mine right now on my current TC and at 100% flat.

100 flat nets 3190 RPMs hovering.

Punchouts are SICK!!! The Quark gyro I have is unbelievable too. The tail is LOCKED in.

I am still waiting on batteries for this thing. I have one Blue Lipo that came with the heli. It is 1800mAh 4S 20C. I have a set of Turnigy 1800mAh 4S 40Cs on the way. Those should really rock!!!

Yeah guy, Rave Rocks at this HS, you will love this little crazy thing :D

And yep, gyros works much better with such HS, cause the tail ratio on the Rave is made for that!!

G5 and Rave are totally different in their design and concept.
Head system differ a lot, flybar ratio, mass repartition, geometry....
Outrage is made for HS 2400-2700, Next-D for HS 3100-3400, I mean on flybared setups.
You simply need to fly your heli in the way it has been thinked.

With high HS like 3200-3400, flight times on -10/14T/4S, around 100% flat thro curve, mixed FAI/3D will be at least 5'00" on 2200 mah batteries, without draining them too much making them last longer. With good collective management, you can increase this to 5'30". Hard flyers on 14T are more in the 4'00" - 4'30" range. With your 1800 mah packs on 13T 100% flat, considering your flying style, I think you'll get between 4'00" and 4'30" of pure fun :smokin:

with my -8 motor running 100 percent I get about 2:30-3:00 minutes of flying.

What's your pignon on the -8, your batteries capacity, and how many percent of them do you drain?

I tryed two weeks ago the -8 on 12T, and what I can say is that it need very good lipos, mine were off-challenge and very hot. Flight times was really shorter than with -10/14T. About power, the heli was generated more HS in FFF, but had less torque in 3D stunts, but this is not an objective comment, as my batteries are old and tired. I'll receive new 40C lipos this week, I'll ask my friend to try its -8 again :)

well all my packs are 30-40c so they keep up with the motor fine. the -8 should have far more torque then your -10 so try it again with better batterys. I actually find myself flying in idle up 1 more as it's only 80% throttle so it still has a lot of power but a little better flight times and smoother to fly.
