My old MDS .38 finally melted itself in my JR Ergo so it has recently been rebuilt with a brand new OS 37. I am getting ready to start breaking in the engine but I have never broken in a ringed engine before. I was wondering if there were any special considerations due to cold weather. It is generally between 35-45F right now where I live. I thought that I need to run it slightly colder than in summer to account for the extra cooling. It is my understanding that a ringed engine does not need to reach a certain temp for proper break in like a ABC/N does. Thanks in advance.

Richen 1/2 turn beyond the recomendation and adjust until it runs consistantly.
then fly it!

Any engine needs to be run up to temp to break in, its just less critical with ringed engines because there's no pinch at the top of the sleeve that needs to expand. Running them slobbering rich does nothing but waste fuel. Wayne is right, run it 1/2 turn or so rich and gradually start leaning after a tank or two. You will feel it when the ring seats, it will start running cooler at the same needle setting.

Let it warm up with it idling for a minute or 2. Giving it beans whilst still very cold could cause cold seazure - potentially more damaging than a hot seazure

Ok, I've started the break in process and I have a few more questions. A few days a I put one tank through it a idle and then another just beginning to hover. Today, four flights through it hovering, slowly leaning it down using the "Needle Control Valve" from 2 turns to 1 turn with the engine temp getting up to 165F at the end. Came back in decided to read the manual again and evidently I was supposed to lean the idle control screw("Mixture Control") not the needle to get a decent hover throttle. This is backwards from my previous engine so I thought I would clarify the exact procedure. Here is what I think I should do, if this is wrong, please let me know:
Turn the needle valve(thumb screw) to 2 turns out.
Keep trying to hover slowly leaning out the mixture control(the one you need a screwdriver for) until I get a decent throttle response.
Over some flights, slowly lean out the needle valve until I get approx. 1-1/2 turns for the final adjustment.
Thanks for any advice.
