I have just gotten an Ion with 10 to 1 gear ratio with an Actro 32-3. I am running 3 Futaba 9252 and 611 gyro. I wanted to run 10s innitially and later run 12s so I started looking for a controller to do both. I decided to try the CC HV 110 so after obtaining the controller and the Castle Link I began gathering info on recomended programing.
First I read Shawn's recomendations here on HeliFreak, which were really good and actually got me a good setup . I liked the controller and now I really wanted to know how it worked. After some experiments I decided to find out what kind of technical support CC had. I will admit they were easy to get in touch with and very friendly, heck they were even patient as I asked every question I wanted to know. After talking with them several times I by no means am an expert but I feel as if I have my Heli flying great and after all that was the original Quest.

1) calibrating the throttle - go into the castle link and set these values.
################################################## #####
# Castle Link Data File
# Created: Wednesday, November 15, 2006
# Do Not Edit This File By Hand
################################################## #####
Brake Ramp: Super Slow
Cutoff Voltage: 180
Hex55: 85
Brake Strength: 0
Direction: Forward (*)
Spool-Up Speed: 5
Throttle Type: Heli: fixed endpoint heli
Current Limiting: Disabled
Brake Delay: No Delay
Motor Start Power: 2.125
Throttle Response: 2
Motor Timing: Standard Advance (*)
Cutoff Type: Soft Cutoff
PWM Rate: 13khz (*)
Governor Gain: 16

Note: this is on a 10s Ion with Actro 32-3.

After setting these values, set ATVS to as close to 50 as possible and set your throttle curve to 0-50-100. ( note: remember the ATVS need to be brought in on 2 sides.) After achieving this , make sure the blades are off and with the power off to the esc, turn on the TX and go to full collective. Turn on the Heli and slowly begin to increase the throttle atv until you hear the esc beep. Add a couple points to it after the beep and then turn power off to the esc. Now pull the throttle or collective down to the bottom and turn power on to esc. Now open the atv slowly until you get the audibile alarm. Turn off the power to ESC and throttle is calibrated.

2)Checking for Recomended Headspeed- Now we are still in the fixed-endpoint Heli Mode and we are gonna find the recomended HS for our setup. I suggest fully charged Batterries and putting the blades back on for this next step. Go into the throttle curve and set all the values to zero, I am running 3 points on my curve and I have 0 pitch at center stick. Go to center stick on the TX and set all the throttle curve points to 0 and push the stick to the 0 degree setting at center. Now carefully put power on the heli and then the esc and you will here an alarm telling you the Heli is armed. Slowly increase the value to 75% on the throttle curve and when it stops increasing speed check it with a tach. This HS is your target HS or recomended HS. Now reduce the value back to 0 and shut it all down. My heli wanted to run around 1850.

3) Setting the Gov speed- After shutting down the Heli we will hook it to the Castle Link and enter the setup mode again. After entering the setup we will change the Heli mode to Heli Gov. Low. We disconect the link and hook up the control wire an d get ready to spool up again. Our throttle curve is still at 0 and we verify this at this time. After checking the stick is set to center at 0 pitch and we turn the heli on and the the esc. As we increase the throttle we see if the taget HS can be aquired by increasin g the throttle curve until we get to 100 %, mine only got to 1650 which is lower than the taget HS. Go to 0 on throttle curve and shut down. Hook back to Castle Link and go to Heli Gov. High- again verify 0 on throttle curve value at center stick with 0 pitch. Turn on heli and the put power on esc, wait for alarm and then increase value of throttle curve until desired HS is aquired (1850) . Shut down and your throttle curve value was probably around 38. Set the throttel curve to this value and set the Hold values in throttle hold to 0 . Put TX in hold and set the flight selector switch to idle 1 where the there is a straight line at 38 or desired value which yielded the HS as done earlier. Turn hold off and the heli will spool up slow. If there is a tail jerk after spool up then the gain should be reduced until jerk is gone. At the lower HS mine liked 16% Gov. Gain.

4) enjoy flying and I hope this helps. The gov. gain sets how aggressive the throttle is at stayi ng at the target speed. Too low is mushy and too high has an oscilation.

5) Startup in Gov. mode should always be with a switch so the value is put directly to the esc.

I hope this helps as these are just suggestions and they are working for me. I am well pleased. Good Luck. Thanks to Berny ext.123 at CC.

So I guess the main questions are;

Should 10s Ion-x guys go to a cc 110hv on 10s vs a Kontroniks 55?

Should Ion-x guys go for a power jazz or cc 110hv for 10-12S?

Cheers,

Tom C

Tom, this post is for information only. I have a 55 and I have hv110 and I have orderd an hv85. I am just trying to give guys options and this is a post with very basic info for a pilot to be able to understand the setup so they can form their own opinion. My HV110 is working well and has 60 flights on it now, pleasurable flights. No FDR to this point as it has been cool everywhere and very predictable with these settings. I like the Jazz as I have flown it in the Razor but when a guy can save over $50 , I want to check it out and I like its flexibility.
The other thing is that I plan to go to 12 to 1 and run 12s. I am happy with 10s but the original goal was to get a 10s baseline to compare to 12s. If weather permits I will have added up a total of 100 flights by Monday but it is raining here now.

I have heard too many people say this controller ( hv110 ) does not work well and I want to challenge those guys to try it again. I am not claiming to have the only way to swt this up and I am certainly not claiming to have the only way to set these up, but I will say it is working for me. Well good luck and I hope this post helps someone.

Very interesting Clint. I have a HV-110 on the way from Espritmodel.com and will try your setup. I really like supporting Castle here in the USA and I am tired of waiting for a Jazz.

Can't wait to try it, right now my Ion-X is at 9.5:1 again, would like to run 1975 HS at about 75% in GOV mode if I can get it all setup.

It is very nice to see that CC is getting the software (firmware) sorted as 1.51 had a lot of features, but was very hard on packs. Looks like the new versions are a lot more refined and will probably work very well for us.

"proof is in the pudding" as the ol' saying goes. It is fantastic to have people that are willing to try things out, sure makes it easier on all us other folks in the world. Thanks for your time and efforts Clint, fatastic and detailed reports here.

Clint...as you already know my settings were very close to those...I missed the gain trick for the "jerk" I have just a little bit of one on both the E-magnum with the HV110 and the Trex 600 with the HV85...thanks for that tidbit!

Hey Clint,

I'm glad to hear that your 110 has been treating you as well as mine have treated me - I've run them for 2 seasons now and they've worked really well.

From your reports the new adjustable gain feature seems to fix the GOV's surging problem - cool. Sounds like I have to give the new firmware a shot.

Great info man, keep it coming.
- Rob

** Somehow I have been having real good luck with my 2-stage, Neu powered Ion - go figure.

The 110 has been very adjustable and it is working well. I just got an 85 and I will be testing it on my Razor with the 45-08. I will let you know how that works too.

I have run the CC HV110 on 9.6 to 1 and 10 to 1. I noticed I needed to turn the gain down from my original thought to make things smoothup. I ended up running around 50%. I went as low as 35% and it worked great. All in all the controller has 90 flights on it now and I am really liking the flexibillity of this unit.

6 flights on the HV110 and so far so good. I am still playing with settings. Right now it is working well on 12S though. My average power draw has been right around 2000 watts. I need to get the data recorder on there and see the peaks. It seem to be holding head speed in Gov mod pretty well right now.

I am seeing HS from 1800 to 2100 and as you would think it is more efficient at 1800 , I would like to note there was not much difference in efficientcy between 1800 and 1900. It is working well.

So it is working well on 12S in governor mode? This is excellent news, now I wish I had a 12S setup to try the 85HV with, I will await one of you lucky fellas to try that one out, where there is no snow and sunshine. :)

GAIN...............

I have been bringing the gain down as I brought the headspeed down and I am seeing even with 9.6 to 1 the heli becomes more effficient at lower headspeeds. I flew 5 min hard @ 2100 and put back 80%. The same flight with a HS of 1800 I put back 2830 back into a 4350............big difference but I still had the power. The heli stayed consitant thru the duration of the flight at both settings but I can stretch the time with 1800. The HV110 is working well for me as I approach 100 flights on this Ion combo with Hv110 and Actro 32-3.

I am travelling home now but I will post more later. Big power gain with the 85..........................Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Razor loves the HV85. Smooth and robust power. I can get power out of the 45-08 on the 85 that I could not see on the JAZZ.....................more later.

setup was nice andd easy , I am running 3 head speeds with a very nice soft start and the power is very nice. I am flying pretty aggresive with the new power and I can Hammer the snott out of the Razor for 6 minutes..............I fly smooth but I overflew the heli with good power and even early during the day with cold temps , the 3700 yielded more power than the 4350's did on the Jazz. At 6 min I was putting back 80% but with the Jazz I was flying 6 1/2 min. but I figure I am taking what the Heli is giving me..........power.

The Ion is rocking also on the HV110...........both running smooth and pulling strong. Several people flew the Ion and the Razor and commented on how smooth they both were. Several people have commented on how cool everything stays on both the Razor and the Ion.............Chris and I call them responsible setups......... the equipment should work for a long time as it is all cool and working well together. CC has a winner in my book with the new software and the HV series controllers. We started testing the CC controllers as an alternative controller just to get info but now I am running them in all my e-helis. The guys in Huntsville will tell you that my helis flew tons of flights this weekend as I stopped only to change packs and was off again.
