Greg, DJ,
I'm in the middle of hacking my A620.
You know that little spring you talked about?
It dropped out before I could see where it came from.
Where did it come from? :dontknow
Twiddling my thumbs waiting to go back together until you tell me where.
Thanks

If its the same spring I'm thinking of it goes where the on/off switch is.

Well, there is only one spring in there. The on/off did seem kinda mushy without it there, so I might try sticking it there.
Did you hack yours, or just peek?

Ok, got the spring back in. No one who has done it seems to remember where it goes, so I found a little hole in the plastic that it fits right in. It does not go under the trigger or the power button as there is no room for it. It goes under the whole circuit board over by the speaker.
Anyhow, it's hacked, all back together, and good to go!
Thanks for the motivation Greg, and thanks for being the second one to do it DJ.

:glasses2: I did it. This is an A620 but the new A640 looks indentically constructed.
Thanks for those pictures.
Can You tell me, You are connecting 3 wires, instead of two. Do I need to plan a twin switch (like from www.rc-flysoft.com) or can a single do the trick ?
Thanks and regards,
Ruud

Looks like it works with just connecting the 2 wires. single switch

The UPS man delivered my 640A today. Wow! This is a very nice little camera. Now I just need my Askman mount and I will be all set. Gona play with the camera a while before hacking it open for the switch...

For those who have done the switch mod on the 640's.
Do you have to trigger both the auto focus and shutter or can it be done shutter only?

I have read elsewhere recently that there is no need to bother with the focus step, as when the shutter is actusted, it automatically does focus first. I believe the two-step shutter is for manual use where the photographer wants to set focus on a paricular subject. For AP work, infinity is going to be right 99% of the time, so letting the camera do its thing is fine.

GJestico, just wanted to say thanks for the how to. I just finished successfully hacking my a640 and I would have never attempted it without your photos. I must have ran to the pc at least a dozen times to study the photos.
My only 'concerns' during the hack was how to force the top cover off the camera along the rear edge. There's some sort of locking tab near the rear eyepiece area on top that really grabbed the top cover. Force, wiggling and prayer seemed to work.
The other thing that was aggravating was that I failed to notice initially just how far the flat ribbon cable was pushed into the electrical socket. The first time I reassembled the camera I didn't have that cable in far enough and some of the button functions and zoom didn't work. After taking it apart again and pushing the cable in harder (prayer was necessary once again  ) it started working like a charm. That cable looks delicate and there's not much room for fingers to push, just be careful and make sure the locking bar is out while u're pushing.
I didn't run into the spring that was mentioned above. Maybe it's missing from the 640 or maybe mine's on the floor somewhere.
I only connected the shutter wire and common, I didn't use the focus, it seems to work fine on the bench. The little wires (an old JR receiver antenna wire) were routed out thru the strap hook hole, the hook just lifts out.
I took a bunch of photos as I took it apart to document where the screws went. I'll attach a couple, might help the next guy.
thanks again GJestico.

yes that hack is a tedious one... and come to think of it I don't recall seeing a spring either. I think the A640 doesn't have one. Scott will be relieved to hear that as I think he thought he lost it on dissassembly :)
I truly love this camera. My clients noticed a difference the first time I used it and they continue to love it.
Try having some 8x10 prints made on glossy paper of your best shots. You'll be amazed at the level of detail in the prints!

Actually I had the A620, and it did have a spring. I did not lose the spring, it just came out and did not know where it went back in!!

Yes, I rate the canon A620/630/640 WAY above any other point and shoot camera, and I bought about 7 higher end point and shoot cameras last year and stuck with the A6x0 series.

DJ, I ordered one as well. How do you like it now that you've had it a while? Any advice on accesories other than the .66 combo?

I love it!!! don't get the Raynox .66x! get the Canon .7X that is made for this camera. Much better lens with less distortion and much more crisp at the edges.

:D Thanks DJ.
Yes, the Canon 0.7x lens is good quality. I'll sell mine, barely used, for half what a new one costs if anyone wants to try one out.

Woohoo, my 640 is on the way. :woohoo :woohoo
I'm just setting up at the moment and using a 3yo sony P92 but I just bought mine (new) on a local auction website. :woohoo :woohoo
My biggest problem at the moment is working out a name for the business... All I did was take and share a couple of photos and now people want my services... scary really

Pete make a list of all the names you can think of and then check thier availability for both local buisness names and also if you want a web site with a .com or .net
it took me 6 or 7 names before I found one that was available. I ended up with AwesomeAerials.com
I was going to use Treetopaerials or Tree Top shots but the wife liked the other one better. I think those two are still available.
if you go to godaddy.com you can check
