View Full Version : G-26 on Start Up

I'm assuming that when I start my G-26 after the first run up of the day, that it is normal when restarting that it immediately starts at a high RPM then settles down to idle. It does it every time. It runs maybe two or three seconds at a fast RPM, then settles.
I'm just checking because I assume this is really not good for the clutch, but there isn't anything that can be done to stop it.

If you stop the engine by choking it, then there is excess fuel in the carb. When you restart it, the extra fuel is burned off, causing the engine to race for a few seconds.

I always shut down by closing the throttle all the way to kill the engine. I have been lucky to say that I have not had to use the choke method yet

Closing the throttle chokes the engine. It's the same thing. Either way, you're closing off the air supply.

yep, normal thing to happen. Try setting your throttle trim down a few notches before starting it, if you have already been running it that day. I don't know, but that might cause it to run a little less RPMs on start up.
It is normal for the motor RPMs to increase when first starting; however, as was mentioned by Brady, just decrease the throttle trim a couple clicks when re-starting. I had the same problem on cold starts but I found that using the choke until the motor fires, then setting the throttle trim to its idle position eliminated the increase in RPMs on start-ups. If the motor is warm, however, the increase in RPMs is hardly noticeable. As you might expect, no two motors are going to act the same when you take into account all the variables: tuning, fuel, oil mixtures, altitude, humidity, temperature, etc, etc. Just trying to put your mind at ease - you're normal.
