Is the 2.4GHz band legal for use on flying models in the UK??

Dont see why not - I've got plenty of other "gadgets" that use 2.4ghz ( xbox360 , audio-video sender etc ) - or are they using different bands within the 2.4ghx range????

You should look into it properly.
I just found out that 2.4ghz is NOT legal at any aero clubs here in Australia.
So you never know what the laws may be in the UK.
Local club should be able to tell you over the phone.

It's OK for ground use - ie Nomadio Sensor etc but I don't think there are any 2.4Ghz Transmitters sold in the UK for air use which implies it's not legal

IIRC form other threads, DX uses too much power. Approval is in the works.

Down Under the national club hasn't approved the DX7 so you can't fly it at club fields.
