He goes down in the trees. Did he loose it because he went too high? Did he bleed off too much from the blades and couldn't get it back? I can't do autos. So have no idea.

If I remember correctly the blades folded for him. (I was attending Collin Mill's seminar on gyros when it happened so I am not sure that I'm right on this.)
Actually the heli crashed in the field next to where 3D Masters is held, a building site at the time. But there were no building at the actually crash location. The trees you can see in films from 3D Masters are just separating different fields from each other so the trees aren't stacked that wide.

I got an answer. Has anybody ever stopped the blades like that and restarted them?

Only God can help if they fold.
And in every case so far, he has been reluctant to intervene.
