Greetings,

I have a JR 8103 and a 662. I was trying to get the 662 working as a slave/buddy box but I am not having any luck. Everything I read said the trainer cord is just a standard, straight through 1/8th inch mono audio connector.

I picked up a 6.5 foot 1/8th inch to 1/8th inch audio cable at Radio Shaft and tried to get things to work.

I set up the 8103 so that Channels 1-4 were to the slave setting.
I removed the Tx crystal from the 662(slave)
Both batteries were charged
Both Radios are PPM

I turned on the 8103, then I plugged the cable into the DSC on the powered-off 662(it powers up by itself when you plug the cable in) and then connected the other end of the cable to the 8103. When I plugged in the trainer cord to the 8103 the "Snap Roll [R-Up]" display chaned to [Trainer 1234].

When I throw the trainer switch (and the trainer indicator on the 8103 starts flashing) the 662 has absolutely no buddy box control over the aircraft and all of the the 8103's controls still work on the airplane.

The trainer port on the 8103 works, I run it with realflight.

any ideas on this one?

I set up the 8103 so that Channels 1-4 were to the slave setting.

I would think the 8103 needs to be set to Master settings. The 662 is the slave radio. I don't use JR, but that would be my thoughts about it.

Also is the 8103 in aircraft mode and the 662 in heli mode? You will need them both set to the same mode of aircraft in the program.

Hi David, I switched the Channels so the trainer was in normal mode as well, no luck. The 8103 and the 662 are both in Aircraft mode as well. Ohmed out the cable too, polarity is correct and conductivity is good.

I just tried it the other way around (662 as Tx 8103 as buddy) with no luck either, I think maybe the trainer jack on the 662 or 8103 is shot, going to take a look at those next.

Try this with the 8103. Flip the trainer switch to the ON position and see if the 8103 controls still work the aircraft. If the controls still work when switch is engaged to let Slave radio have control. I would think something is not set right in the trainer program in the 8103. Cable does not have to be plugged in to test it this way.

Yes with the trainer switch on the 8103 still has control of the servos.

Unless I'm missing something the trainer config is really simple. There's 1 menu with 4 toggles (throttle ail, elev, rud) those are all down.

Well unless I am missing something. Most radios I have used for training, when you pull the trainer switch on at the Master radio, the servos will not move when the master sticks are moved. Some of the newer radios do have in the trainer program you can overide the slave radio commands by moving the sticks on the master. If your radio has that option and you can cut it off do so. Then if the controls still move when you have the trainer switch pulled, I would think something is wrong in the master radio trainer setup.

Are you running in PCM mode? IF so, your slave has to be in ppm for it to work.

I tried to use a 9303 and 8103 on a buddy box. After an hour of trying, I could not make the 9303 the master and 8103 the slave. It works fine the other way around, though. I also tried to set up a 4 channel plank radio for a guy at the field and there was some funkyness getting that to work.

I think the bottom line is that JR has some weird inconsistencies in its buddy box system. Some radios will work better with some than others...
