Hi there
I want to install a OS 46 engine in a Raptor 30 body. Can anyone help me on what hardware changes need to be made? I am flying at 5500 ft altitude and need that bit more power specially in windy/ gusty conditions.

O.S. 46 will drop right in, you shouldn't need to change anything.

If I recall correctly, you will need to purchase a Raptor50 engine mount. You do for sure with an OS50, but the OS46 might be different.

The fan might also need to be replaced, or modified so you can spin it right down onto the crankshaft. Again, this is the case with the OS50, but your mileage may vary with the OS46.

The OS46 and 50 are identical in exterior size. You will need the 50 motor mount and fan.

Oh yeah, and the gear ratio should be 8.5:1. Gohbee sells the 85t spur and 10t pinion gears that will work. Their 50 engine mount is inexpensive and will also do the job for you.

The Stock R30 fuel tank will give you about 6 minutes. If you are converting a V2 then you will be OK, but if you're converting a V1 then the fuel tank will be on the small side for that engine. The R50 tank won't fit in the V1 frames, so you might consider finding a Nalgene bottle to use as a fuel tank. 500cc of fuel capacity or a 50 is like dual tanks in a pickup :)

How does this setup work? From what I've read, the 46 is a little too much power for 550s (ala, running your car in 1st gear all the time)

It can be done with careful setup of the throttle and pitch curves.
It is easiest to use a gov.

You might just be best off getting a 30 to 50 conversion kit. you can use the 46 with the 550 blades for now, and then everything will be set when you are ready to upgrade to a 50.

The old OS 46 will not have a lot more power than a modern OS 37 or Toki 40.

I ran a OS 46 in my raptor v1 on 550 blades for about 2 yrs. i was making power leaps and bounds with it over the 32. thats only with 15%-20% nitro, never tried 30% like i do now... just limit the power if need be. IIRC, the 46 mount is the one to use, as i couldnt use the hyper 50 with it so i bought a regular 50 mount. i used 8.5 gear ratio. i dont remember the fan setup, but it was stock plastic and not a metal upgrade.
If you already have the 46, go for it. but if you dont, get a hyper 50 and the conversion kit. you will be happier in the long run. fwiw,

I'm currently running the OS50 Hyper in a stretched V1 Raptor 30.

10 degrees pitch, 1900rpm, not even a hint of bogging. All this with 15% Coolpower, and a slightly rich main needle (engine isn't even a dozen flights old)

NOOB ALERT!!!

SO, if you can fit a 50 in a 30 then why buy the 50 kit? Seems you could get by with the 30 and when you need more, swap the motor and bingo. The 30 size kit should be able to do 3d with no bogging. I am probably totaly off but just wondering. i am looking to buy a 50 for my first since i read about people getting to the point where the 30 is just not doing it for them and bogging down. So why not stay with a 30 and do the 50 conversion?

Where could one find this conversion.

If you already own a 30, then the stretch to a 50 is cheaper. If you don't already own a machine, then buying a 50 kit is cheaper.

It's not just the power of the 50, the benefits come from it being a 50 sized helicopter. For a lot of reasons, a 50 is a much, much better machine to fly. If you only put a 50 engine into the 30 heli, don't expect any real benefit (unless you fly at high altitude).

It's really a "whole package" kinda thing, and I would definitely recommend you get the Raptor 50 V2 right off the bat. Great flying heli, with superb aftermarket support.

Thanks for the help. I figured there was more to it than just a larger engine.
